If both of your babies are head down......

Did your doctor really want you to try to deliver vaginally (assuming you haven't had a prior c-section of course).  Both of my babies are head down (which I'm happy about of course) but I'm also worried that I won't be given a choice if they are both head down.  I'm thinking I want to try a vaginal delivery but some days I think I want a c-section to avoid an emergency situation.

Re: If both of your babies are head down......

  • My babies were breech or transverse for most of my pregnancy so I had already scheduled a c/s for 38 weeks.  When the babies turned head down at 33 weeks I thought about possibly going for vaginal, but then my water ruptured at 34 weeks without me going into acitve labor so we decided on the c/s anyway since infection was a possibility.  I also didn't want to deal with ending up with an emergency c/s or the double whammy.  My OB gives the option for elective c/s in all cases anyway I think.

    Good luck!

  • I really wasn't given a choice. My OB said as long as Baby A was head down I was delivering vaginally.

  • I decided well ahead of time that I was going to try for a vaginal delivery if both babies were head down.  The entire pregnancy at least one of them was breech, but luckily they both flipped head down at around 35 weeks.  My doctor said the decision was completely mine, and that I could do vaginal or a section.  I went with vaginal and I am glad that I did, everything worked out very well.  It was also my second delivery and it felt like a piece of cake compared to my first.  Good luck!
  • My babies were both head down, and my OB said it was completely up to me. I wanted a vaginal delivery, but she always lets her twin moms do a c-section if they prefer.
  • Mine were both head down the whole time.  She asked me how I wanted to deliver, I said c-section, she said she preferred c-sections with her twin moms but she'd support whichever delivery I wanted.  I didn't want a double whammy.

  • Both my girls were head down and I was able to deliver vaginally. I expressed my desire to attempt a vaginal delivery very early on in my pregnancy.

  • Both babies were head down and I wanted to go vaginally so we never really had the discussion.  I delivered in the OR just in case baby B flipped once baby A was out, she didn't but she did turn faceup.  I am no doctor but I think that if you can avoid a surgery you should.

I am no hero and definitely had an epidural but I wanted the most natural/ normal birth possible, just my opinion- not that you asked

No I feel the same way as you, I like opinions.  I just also hope I do have some say in the situation also.  I've already had one successful delivery and I think I could do it again but then I hear stories of people having one vaginally and one emergency C and that scares the crap out of me.

  • Both babies were head down for me and I delivered vaginally.  My peri allowed twin moms to choose an elective c-section, but he advocated strongly for vaginal delivery.  I was scared of vaginal delivery, but he totally talked me into it.  I have no regrets and would a vaginal delivery again in a heartbeat.

  • My OB told me it was completely up to me.  She said obviously c-sections are faster but that she was behind me 100% with whatever I wanted.  I preferred a c-section (I didn't want a double whammy and my son had decells on NSTs previously and flipped a lot, he was baby B) and ended up with an emergency one.

That said, I couldn't care less how I delivered.  Whatever was safest for the babies was how I was going to do it.

  • both my babies were head down the entire time.  my doctors never offered me a c-section.

i had a wonderful birthing experience and i am glad that my doctors encourage vaginal birthing.  it was very quick and recovery was easy.

  • I really wanted a vaginal delivery if at all possible. I did switch practices at 31w but my OBs (especially at the first practice, which was very high-intervention) would have all been fine with me choosing a C-section.

I ended up with a vaginal delivery but since Baby B flipped to breech at some point during labor, he came out by breech extraction.

  • Mine told me it was up to me.

    I chose to have a c/s.

  • I chose a care provider based on their support of delivering twins vaginally, so I don't know that the question would have come up. Much to my dismay, my baby A was breech, so I didn't get a choice.

My vaginal birth was a much faster recovery than my csection, and much better baby cuddling time afterwards.

  • I was given the choice, but my OB strongly encouraged a vaginal delivery if Baby A was head down and larger than Baby B (she was fine delivering B breech if she was smaller than A).  I very much wanted (and was able) to deliver vaginally, but had mentally prepared myself for an emergency section or double whammy the best I could.

    Good luck!

  • My OB pressured me toward a c-section the whole time. I think she really enjoyed the surgery aspect of her job more than the baby-catching aspect, and that colored a lot of her perceptions of birth. I think the doctors who trust that vaginal births are possible (and trust their own abilities to assist with them) are a lot more likely to help you be successful. They are so fast at c-sections, so I don't think there's a big benefit in having one planned. If you have no complications, you might as well let your body go into labor so you know your babies are likely ready to be born.

  • Mine were head down and I had to vaginally (which is what I wanted) he never did ask me if I wanted a c/s.  I delivered in the OR just in case we had to go to c/s or any complications arose, everything went great! :)

  • mine were both vertex. I wanted a vaginal delivery and made that clear from 12 weeks (when they turned down) on. They never flipped once, so there was never another discussion.

I had a complication-free induction and the babies were both healthy.

Had I insisted on a c/s they would have probably listened, however with twins my OB likes the mother to deliver vaginally if possible and they are not opposed to doing a breech extraction (and have a lot of experience doing so).

  • My babies were both head down my entire pregnancy. I don't even remember anyone asking me if I wanted a c-section (i didn't). I did deliver in an OR in case of an emergency. My twin delivery was far easier/faster than my singleton and recovery was a breeze.

  • my LOs are both head down and my OB is ok with me going the V road as long as they are still head down the day I go into labor but of course anything could happen. My biggest worry is the double whammy!

  • I went to a practice that had midwives and a Doctor (who leaned toward keeping things as natural as possible.)  During a vaginal exam, she said that I had a great pelvis, and that helped determine whether I would be able to have a vaginal delivery.  In the end, I was induced at 34 w 5d due to pre-e.  The Dr. on call said that if my girls were tolerating the induced labor I could try to deliver vaginally.  They did, I did, and I liked it.  :)
