1st Trimester

spotting vs. bleeding

Hey ladies.  I moved over to first tri just this week and am seeing red blood today.  The OB ordered me into the hospital for a beta test and I will retest Monday.  I obviously know that time and the numbers will really tell me what is going on, but I thought I would tap into this resource and ask you guys if you know the answer to my biggest question:  What is the difference between spotting and bleeding? This morning, I was definitely just spotting.  I am now at the point where I am seeing more red blood, though.  I am not going through a pad every hour or anything like that, but it is more than a few spots.  Tonight, after laying still for a few hours, I went to the bathroom and saw some light brown spotting.  I was feeling hopeful until I stood up and the red started again.

This. Also, are you passing any clots? 70% of all pregnancies experience some bleeding, so this can be normal. Especially if you're not soaking through a pad within an hour, and not passing any clots. Are you having any cramping or pain?

  • I've been spotting on and off for the last month. Sometimes it's light red...sometimes it's dark brown. I've had tiny clots as well. I've only had one appt with my doc so far (before I was sent for a urinalysis which was a BFP!) I'm awaiting my next appt on Tuesday. I'm a little concerned myself but I have not been having any sort of heavy flow (just spotting) or bad cramps (just mild stretching feelings etc). I've been told by many people that spotting during a pregnancy is completely normal for some. I've also heard of some people spotting throughout their entire pregnancy. So, I can empathize. I'm a little nervous about how much I am spotting but I need to remember that we are ALL different and will have different pregnancy symptoms.

I hope that you have good news come time for your appointment!
