How about a subscription/membership to something. A zoo, aquarium, city pass, indoor play place, etc. Even if a full membership is more than you wanted to spend, a lot of places offer gift cards. I would LOVE if someone did this for DD instead of giving a million toys!
Trying for #2 since July 2010 BFP 8/1/10, missed m/c, D&C 9/15/10. BFP 1/8/11, chemical pregnancy. BFP 3/4/11, measured behind all along, no more HB 4/18/11. D&C 4/29/11. HCG didn't drop, Repeat D&C 6/17/11; confirmed molar pregnancy 6/23/11. Forced break, including two Hysteroscopies in October to remove retained tissue. BFP 12/29/11! Betas @ 10 dpo = 85, 14 dpo= 498, 22 dpo = 7242 Heard HB 1/24/12. 144 bpm!

This, definitely! There are so many places we want to take DS, but it's all so pricey. A lot of our friends have been gifted memberships to the Philly Zoo or other area museums. Great idea!!
Are clothes not an option? With the weather changing, it seems like everyone could use something new. I think the personalized things are cool too like the stools with their names in it.

Check the deal sites for memberships. We bought a family subscription to the LA Zoo from Groupon for half the original cost.
When all else fails I usually buy clothing. It's not super exciting for the kids, but I love it when my friends by DS a super cute outfit or hat that I wouldn't normally splurge on myself. Also, think about disposable things that he uses like bubbles, sidewalk chalk, art stuff, bubble bath etc.
Tickets to an event or a memberships are great ideas too as ppers mentioned!
My parents usually buy the boys a membership to something because my ILs go overboard on toys/clothes etc. They have bought gymnastics, an indoor play area, tickets to the circus, etc. in place of a material item.
My go-to birthday present gift if I don't have an idea of what they want are new pajamas. Nearly everyone could use more PJs and bonus points if they are super cute or unusual. Buy a pair of matching slippers and/or socks and it's a great gift.
