Cloth Diapering

If you don't have a diaper sprayer...

...do you ever NOT dunk and swish. Most of the time DS has solid BM. But with a recent vacation and changes in his diet they have become more like peanut butter, I am finding it SO hard to get off, and there hasnt been any point to the dunk and swish. DH really doesnt want me to buy a sprayer because he is convinced there is going to be a lot of splash back, but at the same time he thinks cleaning them out the way I am right now is gross.

Is there any harm in just throwing these in the pail and doing 2 rinses before I wash them?

Re: If you don't have a diaper sprayer...

  • There's no way I'd throw solids poo straight into the washer. I dunk and swish. It may take a couple of tries, but the solid bits get off and my diapers are clean clean clean.
  • We needed a sprayer for the same reason.  99.9% of DD's poops are peanut buttery mush.  We had problems with the splatter (I just couldn't get a good technique going that wouldn't get mess all over the bathroom), so my husband invented the Spray Pal.  I don't want to break TOS by posting a link, but you can google it to see what I mean :)  GL!

  • You can use toilet paper to try and wipe it off, or keep a plastic knife or dollar store spatula in the bathroom to scrape. Definitely do not put in your machine.

thanks I think I am going to try this. I am literally in the bathroom for 5 min trying to get his poop off, which isnt easy when DS thinks the toilet and toilet water are for him to play in. The thought of putting straight poop in my machine is FAR more gross than scraping it off.

I could not justify spending money on a contraption that I would only use for a few weeks (after 3 weeks, it turned ploppable) and that I could take care of with some good old fashioned TP. I figured I would end up getting poop all over the bathroom if I got the sprayer anyway.

  • I dump what I can then use the hand held shower sprayer in our guest bathroom. It has way better water pressure then the toilet sprayers.

  • Before I had a sprayer I'd leave them soaking in the toilet if immediate swishing wasn't working.
  • I use a spatula. I leave it in the toilet bowl brush holder, so there is no mistaking it for an actual spatula. It works great.

I never dunk and swish. That sounds icky.

  • Sometimes it takes a few swishes, but it will come off.  I promise you, my DS had the most disgusting, huge formula PB poops before we even got to the solids debacle.  It will come off.  Hold the diaper inside out by all four of the tabs and give it some good agitation.

Please do NOT use liners.  Pixy (I think?) has blogged about an experience a mama shared on here where she stopped up her employer's sewer pipe with only a couple of liners per day (and caused a huge flood too, I believe).

You do not need a sprayer.  It will come off, and honestly you will be done with PB poop before you know it.  Not to mention that in no time your kiddo will be all over the place, and able to get into every room.  If you want to have your entire bathroom sprayed down by a mischievous toddler, go for it!  LOL

  • I use a spatula.  The water in our toilet bowl is pretty low so I can't dunk and swish.  But the spatula is super easy.

however long the night, dawn will break.
