Cloth Diapering

Daycare diapering

I'm currently looking for a job and the kids will have to go to daycare. I have been reading up on using CDs in daycares and I know the laws in my state. I'm just nervous I'll never a daycare that will accommodate me. I  guess I'm just looking for some words of advice and success stories.

If I do find a daycare that will accept my cloth diaperness I plan on buying AIOs or pockets. How many should I buy (I have none though I do plan on buying a "show piece" for when I do tours). I do laundry every other day and I would like to stick to that.

ETA I know legally (in my state at least) they have to change every 2 hours and can do that math but how many extras should I get.

Re: Daycare diapering

  • Our daycare center was happy to accommodate us once they saw the cuteness. Word of wisdom, though, get the colored since the white ones look too much like disposable and they threw one away by accident.

We brought in BG 3.0s and a wet bag. We only do daycare MWF, but we bring 5 dipes per day. They rarely go through all five, it's usually 4. I find that if I throw in the load right when I get home, the diapers are dry by the next AM. If I wait, though, and hang them up before I go to bed, then the covers may still be a bit damp. We have 13 pockets and that is just perfect for our situation. (We do not use pockets when she is at home, we use covers and PF.)

  • DS's new daycare was reluctant to CD for "Sanitation" reasons.  They were worried about the smell.  I took in one of the diapers (FB) as well as a wetbag and cloth wipes.  They agreed to give it a shot.  We just completed the first week and she was amazed that there was NO smell.  We're still EBF, so that could have something to do with it.  I would recommend showing them everything they will need to CD and asking if they are willing to just try it.  They may be surprised at how easy it is.

  • We interviewed 3 daycares.  One told us it was illegal in our state to use them.  (A lie.)  So we didn't really want to use that daycare anyway!  :-)  The one we are going with originally said no, but we offered to do a demo and then they got on board.  LO starts in a few weeks.  We have 18 BG4.0s which we are hoping is enough for fulltime CDing (at daycare and at home).  She will be there for 7 hours and we plan to bring 5 diapers.  We have 4 wetbags (2 large, 2 medium).  We will probably rotate the 2 mediums at daycare, and keep the larges for home.

To the pp, thanks for the advice about the white CDs.  We have 6 noodle - I'd hate to lose one.  We will try to keep those for home.

  • Ditto the previous posters, she's only used 4 diapers at DC but I make sure they have five every day.  My state requires them to bag each individual diaper and then put them in a larger bag.  My DC would have just used plastic bags but I couldn't stomach the thought of throwing away all the plastic all the time so I bought some single diaper sized wetbags and a large PW hanging wetbag.  I was lucky that my DC was already familiar with CD's and has a few older babies there with CD's but the other momma's used snap CD's and the director was telling me how they were having problems with leaks all the time.  When they saw my velcro dipes they were amazed and her teachers love them.  No problems yet!  So I strongly suggest velcro diapers for your demo :).  Good luck!

  • We had 1 center say no, didn't really give a reason, just wouldn't do it.  The center we chose said yes.  DS is their first (and only) CD baby, but almost a year later and no problems!

I take 5 in everyday and always make sure there are 2 in his cubby just in case.  That makes 7 diapers at any given time.  We've never had to use the extras, but it gives me peace of mind to keep them there.

  • We are in Ohio and it's legal to CD but we had one place already tell us it was against their policy. I told them that was a deal breaker for us. I hope it doesn't become and issue.

Thanks for all the advice ladies. I really want CD'ing to work for our family.
