Success after IF

Losing a twin after seeing h/b?

My RE told me the chances of this happening (at least to me) was 10-12%.  It seems like so many on this board have been through this (well, a lot more than just 10%).  If any of you were quoted the chances of this happening, what was it?

[Sorry, I just told my friends b/c I needed recommendations for a good OB for twins and I'm getting paranoid that this will somehow jinx myself out of having twins]

Re: Losing a twin after seeing h/b?

  • My RE had told me 20%.  He had said the same thing on our first u/s when we had 3 sacs, 20% to lose a triplet too.  Keep in mind, this was before we saw the heartbeats.  I'm not sure if it goes down after that?  Good luck!

Also, on a side note, I didn't think much of  a special OB at first but I went to the DR my RE referred me to and I'm so glad I did.  He has a lot of experience with multiples and I realize now how important I think that is.

  • Well, I live in a smallish town with two hospitals to deliver at - one has a NICU and the other doesn't.  My current OB delivers at the hospital w/o a NICU.  If this stays twins I'm going to switch to an OB at the other hospital.  I just hope I don't make the switch and then lose one.  : (
  • After I saw the heartbeats twice and growth/development, they told me the chances of losing one or both falls significantly.  I don't believe in superstitions, so I don't think you will jinx yourself out of twins by getting a great OB.  Be positive about your little ones (I have to remind myself of that a lot since I don't really have any symptoms and I wonder if I'm still pg all the time!)  Hang in there!
  • My doc said 15-20%, and unfortunately we were in that group.  He said that after we hear the hb (so, 12 weeks I guess?), the risk drops significantly.  With that being said, please don't worry about jinxing anything!  I am a firm beleiver that what happens will happen, and nothing you do or don't do at that point will change anything.  Your odds are wonderful for having two healthy little ones.  :)

  • When we had twins, we were also quoted 10%  as the likelihood of losing one.

  • I don't think I was ever quoted anything.  My original OB actually didn't deliver twins (turned out he was retiring from obstetrics before my pregnancy was over, anyway), so I switched OBs because of my twins.  We had seen the heartbeats twice...I lost Baby B at the very end of the first tri.  We had also told almost everyone we knew (waited until 12 weeks to do it), so that was rather unfortunate.  I agree with others though that you're not going to jinx it!  Just do what you need to do.
  • I'm constantly afraid of losing one of the twins.  I lie in bed, trying to feel the lower baby moving.  It's awful.  I don't want to ruin this pregnancy by missing the joy of it, so I'm working on taking every day for what it is-- a miracle to be a) pregnant and b) still carrying two babies.  I would switch to a doctor who's an expert in twins.  Today, you're pregnant with twins and you (and I) need to act like it :)
  • We were told 15-20% and fell into that category as well. :(

Try not to dwell on the posiblilities though or it will drive you crazy. It's not under your control. You are pregnant with twins until further notice.  :)
