Teachers...first day back?

How was everyone's first day, if it was today?

I am EXHAUSTED. I wanted to punch everyone that told me they were "so tired!" today! I'm used to taking 1-2 naps every day, and I had the craziest, busiest day I think I've ever had at school. I'm a middle school special ed teacher, and I got a tentative schedule a couple of weeks ago. I went to the office today to pick up a new schedule, and it was so crazy in there that I couldn't even get it, so I had to just follow my older schedule. I guess it was correct. Anyway, it was just nuts...I have 5th graders and they had no clue where they were supposed to be, so it was a day of running around, making sure everyone was in the right spot and not having a nervous breakdown, and running back to my room to make sure my more severe student was okay too.

So, so tired. I have to do some work tonight but I just don't want to look at it. I want to run away and never come back!

  • I feel your pain! I teach high school and today was extremely exhausting. I had a doctor's appt after school today and I fell asleep in the waiting room.

And also, my stomach was growling constantly, and I had to pee every 20 mins.

It's going to be a long year. Can't wait until March :) Hang in there!

  • I wish I could've been tired there with you today!  I wasn't able to find a job this year, and they are slooooow processing sub applications around here.  Hope no teachers get sick or... have a baby!  I taught middle school last year, and was amazed at the "sink or swim" attitude teachers had for the kids.  They show up from elementary school and we expected them to understand how to read a schedule, change classes and act appropriately while doing it!

  • I feel your pain. I work as an occupational therapist and I figure it will be October before I really know where all of my kids are.
  • I teach fourth grade & I've been back to work for a month now. I can honestly tell you it only gets worse... or at least for me it has. Last year I used to arrive early and stay late almost every single day. Now I am rarely at work beyond hours. Most days I quickly pack up everything I think I need to take home and leave. The work seems to make it out of the bag maybe once a week... I feel like I barely have enough energy to make it through the day =/ If you can, try sitting as much as possible. And when your appetite picks up, I've been munching on a bag of cheerios all day. I am also only offering conferences in the morning during my plan time so that I never am required to stay late past hours in the afternoon. I feel your pain.. trust me!! I keep trying to explain to DH that teaching is so much different from other jobs... no matter how sick or tired we feel, we have to manage and teach a class of kids. No slacking off, long lunch break, bathroom breaks when you need them... =(

  • I teach middle school and I am soooooo tired!  Not to mention that the power went out for half of the school day!  I was starving the entire day.  I ate snacks between every single class and was still hungry!  My snacks included the following: greek yogurt, pear, nectarine, plum, popcorn, 100 calorie pack of cookies, and cheese!  Needless to say I just made a hearty meal for dinner....meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans. YUM!

  • I am sooooo tired.  I had kindergarten for the first time today, and was not sure what to expect.  I though it went pretty well.  The day went so quickly, which is good - but there was so much to do.  I am glad it is a short week.

  • I teach middle school and today I don't have even a period off...I am beyond tired from the day, not sleeping well and I have a horrible sore throat and cough.  Lost my voice near the end of the day. In fact..I am off to bed early for me!

  • It is definitely taking a lot out of me too.  I know that it is always hard to get back in the swing of things, but being pregnant is making things even harder.  I try to sit as much as possible too, but it is hard with 3rd graders.

  • We've been back for 2 school weeks now.  We just moved into a new school--about 2 weeks before school started...so things were hectic trying to move in, unpack, go to training, set up a new room...all being super tired.

However, now that I've been back, I am starting to not feel as tired at the end of the day as I did the last 2 weeks.  In my experience, it will get easier once you get back into the swing of things.

  • This is our 4th week back and I teach kindergarten.  It is still exhausting because we haven't started many of our times where I sit and teach.  Instead I'm running around like crazy answering lots of questions and helping kids write their name on their papers and such.  Whew!  I feel like it is getting a little better in a way though because DH has volunteered several times a week to pick up DD from his mom's so I can go home and take a nap after school. =)
