what age for writing name?

dd will be 4 in 2 months.  she's not even close to being able to write her own name.  is that normal?  her name is long - 9 letters - no nickname.  I think it's too intimidating for her to write "all" those letters.  Is this normal?  She can write and identify the first letter in her name, but that's the only letter she knows.

fwiw, I'm not really worried or anything - more just curious - b/c dd1 wrote her name much earlier.

Re: what age for writing name?

  • DD- 3.75 years

DS1- can write 2 letters in it and that's it.  There are 2 weeks to his 4th bday.

  • My oldest could write his when he was barely 3, but my youngest is just now getting good at it. He turned 4 in May. He recognizes his name and he knows all his letters but the only thing he writes so far is his name. We're working on letter sounds.

  • I'm pretty sure DD was able to do her's by 4 but, her name is easy - Riley
  • Evan has an easy name, and he wasn't able to do it until well after he turned 4.  Bennett is nowhere close, and he'll be 4 in November.

None of my kids have enjoyed coloring, and they're a little later than normal in getting the pencil grip down.

  • My DD could write hers a little before 3.5.  But, she only writes her nickname Abby, not Abigail, so 3 letters!  We are working on Abigail now at 3.75 and she has learned to write Mommy, which again I realize is not that hard.

  • DS learned around 4. He's still kind of messy and sometimes random, but all 7 letters are there.

I feel sorry for DD with her 9 letter name. :-)

  • My DS started writing his name a few months ago, thanks goes 100% to preschool. He is 4.5, and before school, I couldn't get him to understand the idea of letters being put together.

  • DS can sort of write his first name.  It's short too:)

  • Charlotte turned 4 in May and she can only write it if I write it down first and she copies it.
  • DD was writing her name within a month of turning 3 (full first and last just a few months later).

DS...not so much! He'll be 4 in Dec and knows that his name starts with "C" and can identify it and can sometimes write it. But that's it.

  • DD1 just started writing it, so right after her 4th birthday. She sometimes gets the last AH confused, and switches them though.

  • DD has a pretty easy 5-letter name.  She learned to write it at age 4 in preK.

  • At my kids daycare based preschool, the kids trace their  full names in the 3 year old and room and write it free hand in the 4 year old room.  I know when my older DD started her PreK program last fall at 4 years and 3 months, she was able to write her 1st name although it got better as the year went on since they worked on it daily as they had to sign themself into class.  I am betting that my 3 1/2 year old is very close to being able to write hers as she can already write a bunch of letters when she can see them although she still prefers to trace.

  • DS turned 3 in June and he can read/identify the letters in his name and write 3/5 of the letters. He knows all of his letters and letter sounds but he's still working on his fine motor skills.
