IUI Report and a Question

So, I had IUI#3 today. Responded well to 50mg of Clomid, and had follies at 22mm, 17mm, and 14mm. DH's TMS count was only 3 million, which is what it's been for IUI#1 and #2 as well. We don't have a lot of hope with this count, but RE was hopeful, so I'm trying to be.

So today I asked the RE on-call (not my regular RE) if it's even worth it for us to move to injectibles with IUI. She said that, depending on the results from this IUI, that we will have an appt with my RE and discuss next steps. But she did provide me info packets on injectible IUI and IVF.

She gave me a list of injectible meds commonly used, and circled the ones that they use the most often (Menopur, Follistim, and Novarel).

I haven't seen anyone using both Menopur and Follistim with IUI. Is this an IVF-only protocol? Wouldn't IUI just be either Follistim or Gonal-F? That's what I tend to see from people's tickers. I might be off the mark, but we are trying to determine how many injectible cycles my insurance will cover, and adding the Menopur would give us just one cycle covered before we hit our max.

Re: IUI Report and a Question

  • I can't speak to what is used with IUI, but you are correct about this combo with IVF.  I am using both Menopur and Follistim right now, should be adding Ganirelix in a few days, and will be triggering with Novarel.

Hopefully someone else (or your RE) can speak to this in regards to IUI.

FX crossed that things go well this time, so you don't even have to worry about injectibles.

  • Hi - with my first IUI it was only Follistim and trigger shot. But with my other 3 IUI's it was Follistim, Ganirlex and then trigger shot.  I think the Ganirlex shot were taken so the one lead follicle wouldn't grown quicker than the other follies. And with IVF like nawlingrl post my protocol was Follistim, Menopur, Lupron and trigger shot (lots more shots).  hope that helps and good luck - i hope this IUI works out for you!!!!
  • I'm not as knowledgable as many of the other ladies here, but I'm wondering why you would need to go on to injectibles? Isn't the point of the meds- whatever they are- to get you to produce more eggs? And since Clomid does it, why not stick with Clomid? It's a lot cheaper, after all! Do the injects produce a better quality egg?

Well, I think that data shows that after three tries of a particular protocol, success rates go way down. I have also read that injects = more quality follies = more targets for the sperm to hit when the counts are low. Even though I produce very nice follies on Clomid, I still require 400mg of Prometrium daily (which is a pretty high dose), so the ovulation still may be somewhat "weak". It will be interesting to see my progesterone this time at 7dpo.

Thank you so much ladies for the info. I just hope this works and I don't have to worry about it, but I guess time will tell. I'm trying to stay positive, in that we at least have had enough TMS to even do the IUI! And DH's morphology and motility are beautiful, it's just the count that's normally low...

  • Hi Everyone!

I just joined and thought I would drop in to say hello.  I did IUI#1 yesterday and now the 2ww begins  I now realize the brutality of the 2ww, it gets harder each month but even more so when you have a lot of hope for the round.  My IUI went well, had 3 follies 24mm, 22mm and 16.  They said DH's count was good, 60% and over 100 million.  I'm not sure what to expect in the days to come, only that I return in a week for a progesterone level.  What will that tell me, if I could be pregnant or not?   I'm glad to be here.  Some days are difficult and it feels like everyone is pregnant around me.  Thanks in advance for the support!!
