Childbirth class- WWYD?

So, I put off signing up for childbirth class and now I have a scheduling conflict. The next class is 11/11 and 11/18 (6:30 - 9:00) and I will be 31/32 weeks, but 11/18 is my Dad's birthday. I know my family will be going out to eat to celebrate and I don't want to miss it. There is also a class on 11/17, but it is only one night so it goes from 5:30 - 9:30. The next 2 night session isn't until I am 35/36 weeks which is too long to wait. Do you think the 4 hour class will be too long to absorb the information? WWYD?

Re: Childbirth class- WWYD?

  • If it were me I'd rather not do the marathon session, but it will probably be fine.

I agree that it would make me nervous to wait till the 35-36w session, but on the other hand if it's only 2 classes it might be nice to have it close to delivery so you don't have to remember things too long...our classes are 6w, but they finish when I'll be 36w.

  • I'm taking an "express" class that is from 9-5, so I would say that no, 4 hours isn't too long, but I really just didn't want to sit through 7 weeks of 2.5 hour classes, so I'm probably not a good person to give advice :)
  • A 4 hour class shoudl be fine.  We took 2 3 hour classes.  You will have NO trouble absorbing these things.  The discussions and images will be permanently etched in your brain ;)

  • The childbirth class that we took was 7 hours one Saturday and then 5 hours the next Saturday, so I think a 4 hour class while long would be okay.  I personally would do the 4 hour class over waiting until you're 35/36 weeks since you never know what can happen.

  • Can you ask them if they could do dinner another night?  It's for a good reason, I think!

  • I am going to ask my Mom about doing dinner another night. I hate to do that though, it just isn't the same.
  • I took a Saturday class from 9-4 and it wasn't as bad as I thought. The first three hours were the "class" and learning positions for contractions/etc. The second part was a bit about labor and a tour of the hospital where we pre-registered so it was only about 4 hours worth of actual class time- and a lot of it is common sense. :)?
  • I am taking a class that is from 9-3 and I'll be 35 weeks then. The class I was scheduled for prior got canceled b/c not enough people signed up for it. I had no other choice if I wanted to actually take a class.

  • I'd see if they could switch nights, if not, just take ?a notebook and jot down what you want to make sure you remember.
  • I say to heck with classes. The Dr. will tell me what to do at the hospital and I know how to breath(been doin it for years now). My mom and sister never went to childbirth classes and everything turned out great for them. If it was a free class and I had time maybe I'd go to one but I don't think it's needed.
  • I only wish our class could just be one day.........

I think she put it best.  I took a bfing class and didn't really learn a whole lot, most of it I already knew.  I didn't take any birthing classes, I pretty much knew what to expect just from reading posts on here for the previous 3 years.   I'll probably take the Bradley class next time, but I'd like to try not to get the epi, so that's more for coping.  I don't think that a 4 hour class would be too bad, but I also don't think that the 35/36 week class would be too late.  I took my BFing class at 37w 2d and had DS at 37w 5d.  Few deliver before 37 or 38 weeks.

  • we're not taking our 2 day class till i'm 37 weeks...it was the only time we could fit it in.
