Preemies

Starting solids?

When are you (did you) starting solids with your LO?  One of my boys is already on rice for reflux, but I'm not talking about cereal.  Really I'm asking about fruits and veggies.

I know that AAP recommends milk/formula only until 6 months, but everything else says you can start solids as early as 4 months.

My boys are about to be 6 months old and our pedi says for feeding she doesn't put a lot of focus on acutal v. adjusted age and gave us the go ahead for solids once they reach 6 months.

I'm anxious to start them because H is not a good eater.  His BPD makes it difficult to suck/swallow/breath.  He's gained 12 oz in the month since he was discharged from the NICU.  His speech therapist said most BPD kids do better with solids because they can control the rate at which they enter.  I'm hoping that I can start solids and then incorporate olive oil and protein powder into his purees to boost the calories.

Just curious about your plans.

Re: Starting solids?

  • We started just playing around 5 mths, (with cereal and then adding fruits, veggies). I took it slowly and just took their cues. At six months we are still only doing one a day and working on adding s second in the next few weeks.

A (my tubie girl) actually LOVES solids, but isn't all that interest in bottles...we are trying a sippy cup now.

  • We'll be starting once he turns six months (actual) and shows interest. We'll be taking the BLW-route, though. Super excited yet savoring these last EBF weeks </3

  • In your case I'd be all over it. I bet he'll do great on solids.

  • I think our pedi will recommend we start at C's 6 month appointment in a couple weeks. However, her EI nutritionist thinks we should wait a few more months since she is only 3 months adjusted. So....the jury is still out on this one for us. We may let her start playing with the idea of food but since she isn't sitting up on her own yet and only recently mastered head control, I'm not in any hurry. Oh, and I'd like to get her GI consult before we start too just to be on the safe side.
  • We started Anna on solids at 4 months.

  • We're kind of going back and forth on it.  We attempted it at 6 months actual, 3 months adjusted, and he had no interest.  Then, we tried it again about a month later - still no interest.  We just started again, and it seems to be taking better this time.  He's 7.5 months actual, 4.5 months adjusted.  We had one successful feeding session and one not-so-successful one.  We'll see how it goes going forward.
