I had the same problem. All the names I loved rhymed w/ my last name or were too similar. I like Carolina that you suggested. My only caution would be to the first and last name beginning w/ the same sound too.
You're right all of the Italian names I can think of end w/ 'a'. Gina or Gia would be an alternative to Gianna. Phoebe, Capri?

Re: Does it sound strange
hmmmmmm if it does a huge portion of italians would have very strange names!
love daniella
Ha! Good point. I would LOVE a name like Gianna or Juliana, but unfortunately our last name rhymes with every pretty feminine Italian name . Wahh!
What is the last name?
We are very italian and all my kidshave extremely italian names....maybe i could help.
Sometimes I think it sounds weird, but not in these cases. I don't think the A's sound the same.
Unlike the Leah Sophia post below, which does sound weird to me.

I think they have different -a sounds...
'Car-o-lee-nuh' and 'Dan-yel-luh'
compared to 'Kon-yuh'
I don't think it's too much, maybe it would if it was the same -a sound though.
