I wanna be a SAHM!!!

sorry- just lurking here. I really wish I could quit my job and stay home with DS. Going back to work in October :(   Anyone here quit their job after maternity leave? Was it hard financially?

I took 12 weeks maternity leave, went back to work and put my notice in after 4 months, and left at the end of July after working 5 months. Worst 5 months of my life. The financial part has a lot of variables. Its never easy to give up money, and I was making good money, but you decide what's important to you and your family and you make it work.

  • We planned for me to SAH, so I quit a month before DD was born.

There are two schools of thought on this: some moms think if you have to make any sacrifices, you shouldn't quit working; others downsize their lives completely to SAH.  It's all about what you and your DH thinks is important.

The best way to figure out if you can swing it financially is to live off of your DH's income and bank yours.

I hope you can make it work.

  • Congrats on your precious baby!! :-)

I agree with what PP said about banking your income for awhile to see if it will work for you.

  • I just quit my job last week to stay home... DS was born in March, I returned to work in June and quit my job in Aug.  so far I love it!  DH just got a new job too that will be making more money than we were making together so it won't be too hard but we will make any sacrifices that we need to in order to continue staying home.

  • After I had DS2, I took all the maternity leave (6wks), my vacation days I had left (about 2wks), and then quit.  That was in 2008.  It wasn't hard financially cause I wasn't making much. I worked mainly to just get out of the house.  My paycheck was paying for my lunches, gas, and DS1 in daycare (which we loved).

  • My Dh and I tried to juggle our schedules after having the triplets so someone would be home with them but I was miserable and so was he.So after a couple of months I quit. Financially it hurt (I was an RN) and we had to downsize our life considerably but it has been worth it for us. Like PP said, it is about what the both of you think is important and what you can make work. Good luck on whatever you decide.
  • I knew I wasn't going back when I had my baby, however...we are actually putting more money in savings now (without my income) than we were when I was working. Our priorities have shifted, so if it is important to you, really crunch the numbers.
