For those with no power RE: food loss

If you lose items in your fridge and freezer due to a power outage, you may be covered in your homeowners insurance.

We were part of the storm in the Midwest in July and we had no power for 5 days.  Our insurance company paid out up to $500, no deductible and no receipt or proof of the loss.  We just estimated all our lost items (we approximated $420 including freezer spoilage) and they sent us a check for $420 plus tax.

Just like that.  Most policies have it, but people don't know about it.

  • Thanks for the heads up!  I somehow managed to not lose power, but both mine and H's entire families lost power.  My mom brought her good meat to my freezer but had to toss everything else.
