Failed IUI #2

So DH and I are going to take a month off until trying IUI #3 and then not sure if we should move on to IVF.  I have heard that most people move on to IVF after 3 unsuccessful IUIs. Any experience with success after 3 IUIs?

I have yet to get to IUI #1, so I don't have experience any further than waiting for that.  I just wanted to say that I'm sorry that you weren't successful!  ((hugs))

Thanks.  I really thought this was it until this morning.  Someone else posted about phantom symptoms - which I totally relate to on this cycle.  Have been lurking a lot on these boards and you ladies are a great support!

I have learned SO much reading old posts on here & also from the ladies helping with more recent posts.  I think that most of thought that this process would be easier than it has been & it helps to have other ladies to lean on for support!

Sorry that this IUI wasn't successful for you.  Suggest that you ask the ladies of PG after 35 if anyone had success after 3 IUIs.

Sorry :-(  I'm in the 2ww now and have to fight getting my hopes up for a miracle.  I'm sure you can find some people who have had success on IUI 4, but general consensus among REs seems to be that, if it's going to work for you, it would most likely work by the third try.  Doesn't mean it's impossible, though.  Enjoy your time off this month.  Hopefully it'll give you a chance to relax and rejuvenate before heading into #3.

Thanks ELF.  Thinking of trying acupuncture along with IUI #3.  Have been reading a lot about alternatives.  2ww is the longest 2 weeks.  Good luck!

I'm moving on to IUI #4 starting tomorrow. BUT my SIL went through IUI 6 times. 2 were stopped mid cycle but on the 4th full cycle she got pg! So it's possible! I have to believe it will happen for me and you! Good luck!

The info I got from my RE was that compared to 3 IUIs with Clomid, then 3 IUI's with injectables and then IVF, moving directly to IVF after 3 Clomid cycles is more cost effective. That's mainly because the injectable medications are so expensive. You typically have a higher chance of success with IVF, so if you are going to invest $1000+ in medications alone, it may make more sense to do that with IVF.

I don't know the actual success rates though, your RE would probably be able to tell you your chances of success given your underlying diagnosis. We did 4 IUIs (3 Clomid, 1 injectable) then moved on to IVF.

Sorry about your failed IUI. This is such a difficult process sometimes. I've also heard typically that 3 is the norm, but have seen BFP's from women here and on other boards that have success after the 3rd. I don't know what I would do. IVF is just so expensive, and we would be 100% OOP for that.

Have a nice time during your break. I took a break this month and it was great. Now I feel more prepared to head into IUI #2.

I'm sorry about it not working this time. I had my second IUI today and I have a consult scheduled in two weeks to decide what to do if it fails. I'm pretty sure we are going to move onto IVF, partly because of my age (34) and also because we have MFI. I don't know what to make of all the success rate statistics because there  are so many variables, and based on all the stuff I've read on these boards, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of consensus even among REs. I'm just trying to force myself to trust mine's opinion because he has a lot of experience and go with what he recommends.

We have been doing injectibles both times on IUI.  From a financial perspective, our insurance covers as many IUI's with meds but a limit of 3 IVFs.  We are so lucky to have coverage for it.  It is almost my emotional ability to move on to IVF and know that we have 3 and if they don't work that's the end of the road.  So in my mind, as unreasonable as it might sound, I am so scared for that move.  If it doesn't work, we are done. The emotional aspect of this journey is so much tougher than the physical (not that that's fun).
