What to do with nice dresses? Goodwill?

We are doing a major house purge now that our addition is "done" and we need to organize the entire house.  For a year it has looked like a hoarder's house because we had to move everything out of the upstairs.

Anyway, I can no longer in good conscience keep all my crap in the kids' closets now that I have one, and it all does not fit.

I have a dress I wore to a wedding as a guest that is really nice but I will never wear it again, and a bridesmaid dress, also very nice, dry cleaned after wearing (my bff - I felt like I should keep it for some reason.)  While her wedding will remain an important event, I can't see keeping it.  And she doesn't want it for anything.

All the kids' nice clothes I bring to the consignment shop, but it is for kids and maternity clothes only.  We have no others in our town and would people really buy a bridesmaid dress?

I have had poor luck with CL - listed 3 things and nothing sold.

Am I pretty much down to bringing them to goodwill/salvation army truck?

  • look into charities that provide prom dresses to disadvantaged girls. You can look up a drive in your area here: https://www.donatemydress.org/

  • If any of them are nicer clothing that would be appropriate in a professional setting I'd contact a women's shelter. There are places here that take those kind of things and distribute them to low-income women in the community who need them for job interviews and such.

  • I have taken nice things to goodwill and yes, people will buy them and you can write it off as a donation for taxes.
