Potty training - How and when?

Ok, I think it's time to start potty training and as much as I hate changing diapers I'm not too excited about all the work of potty training. I'd like to wait until I'm sure my DD is ready that way I don't end up having a long battle with her. She's 2 today. She has started to tell me after she goes #2 ("change your butt") which is a good step since she has never before cared if she had a messy diaper. I was wondering when (what age and what signs were your LO giving) and how did you start potty training? And how long did it take?

Re: Potty training - How and when?

  • DS was pulling on his diaper when he needed to pee. Sometimes he would pull it down and actually pee outside the diaper. That was enough for me to start PTing, at 23 months. He was fully PTed 2 weeks before his 2nd birthday. I did not expect it to work but I had to give it a try. I took the plunge and I got lucky. We did bare bottom for a week and then I put him in undies. He still has issues pooping on the potty (he doesn't want to poop in a pull-up either, he is embarrassed about the messy business) but we are working on it. He tells us he needs to poop, he just tries to hold it because he feels ashamed or something.

We went slowly about it, not forcing my hand or anything. Turns out he was ready. We still put a pull-up on him at night although he wakes up dry. He treats pull-ups like underwear basically.
