Dumb q - Fan in baby's room?

Ok, so LO will be sleeping in our room next to me in a PNP at least for 2-3 months or while I'm bf'd. Our room is at the furtherest end of the house and gets the hottest and takes forever to cool off. We live in Florida. We turn the air down at night AND have to turn the ceiling fan on to stay cool. My question is will the fan being on bother him? Or cause any issues? I plan to dress him in a footed sleeper so he doesn't get cold but I don't know if the fan being on will affect him? He can't have a blanket either right? Tongue Tied

  • I have to have a fan to sleep too, I feel like I've been having hot flashes lately. I need the breeze and the noise. I plan on putting LO in a footed long sleeve sleeper or a gown, her bassinet has a hood and that should block the breeze but I'm sure the room will still cool down.

  • A fan is actually a good idea, according to SIDS experts it reduces the risk because it will circulate the air flow in the room.

If you think baby is too cold you could always put a warmer sleeper on him/her. I wouldn't use a blanket for the first year (that may be me being paranoid though).

  • We used a fan with DD - it was fine.  You could always put an undershirt on under the sleeper too if you felt that your LO was too cool (what kind of crazy industrial fan are you using?!?! :P ).  Remember if you are comfortable, they will be too with one more layer on than you.

  • We sleep with 2 fans on, both the overhead and one on the nightstand.  Like sunshiny said, it actually decreases the risk of SIDS.  We've always kept the ceiling fan on in DS' room too.  He slept in our room for 3 months and the fans didn't seem to bother him.  He slept in a sleeper, and was also swaddled.  He also slept in a hat when he was really little.

  • A fan on in room with baby is actually a MUST. Running a fan all the time (even in winter) is recommended for babies up to 1yr old. It reduces the risk of SIDS by 72%.

Baby will be just fine temperature wise.. You should always dress baby how you would dress yourself... Putting too many clothes/overheating baby is a SIDS risk. Always check baby's tummy... Their hands tend to always feel cold, that's normal. My Pedi told me to feel chest/belly area to check if temp was comfortable. If that feels cold then more clothes..if not, they are fine.

  • I agree with PPs about fans being good, and you can always add a layer to LO's jammies if they are too cold.  In addition to the increase in air circulation, I've also heard that the sound can be soothing for babies.

  • We bought a fan for the nursery because of the SIDS risk (we're in an apt and can't get a ceiling fan).

BTDT Moms- should the fan be blowing directly on him or is okay to have it blowing somewhere else (and still hopefully circulating the air around him)?  Stupid Q, I know.

  • We have fans in all the kids rooms and have used it for my 19 month old during the summer months.  It is too cold for the fan in the winter here, but if you are concerned with the baby being too cool, we really like the Halo SleepSacks.  We only have used the ones where the arms are free, but they also have ones for newborns that wrap around their arms to swaddle them.  I bought some for this baby and wish I had some the last time.  The lightweight cotton ones are great for the warmer months.  We still use them now.

I never put it directly on them, if I have one directly on me it gives me as sore throat so I go by that. It will circulate air not matter where you have it in the room.

  • sunshiny79- thanks, that's what I figured about having it directly on him.  I just wasn't sure if the air circulation would still happen.

  • We've always had a fan in LO room.  We just made sure to put a blanket sleeper on him if his hands were cold.  We also made sure that the slight cover of the bassinet was up at all times to keep the air from hitting his face directly.

  • Wow, I'm so glad I stumbled upon this. I was always worried about the fan in our room being on for LO, and that they might get in the bad habit of needing it to sleep when I move them to their own room. It's good to know the benefits of them using one for the first year or so.
