LO does tummy time/play time at least twice a day between nursing, naps, and any outings we have. Sometimes we lay a blanket out on the couch (obviously we sit with him) and put him on his tummy, or on his back and just talk to him while he coos and smiles. Sometimes we put him on his playmat on the floor and do the same, or just a blanket on the floor with some toys. When he is on his tummy he refuses to try to lift his head most of the time. He just lays there and sucks his thumb. He will lift his head pretty good when he is on our chest, or when we are holding him up on our shoulder, but not laying on the floor, bed, or couch. He sometimes will try to hold it up a little and then gets mad. How can I get him to practice holding his head up more?
Also, when should he start being more interested in toys? He will focus on his toys that have lights and sounds pretty well, but won't really follow a toy with his eyes yet, or grab onto any sort of small toy. He focuses on faces quite a bit, which is when he does most of his cooing and smiling. It says in What to Expect the First Year that he should start grasping small toys soon and following toys with his eyes.
Re: Playtime/tummy time
D seemed to start following stuff a bit more as he got closer to the 2-month mark. At 6wks or so, he didn't lift his head off the playmat either. Although, if I propped him with a Boppy he sometimes would lift it, similar to the way he did if on a shoulder. But not always. As far as noticing toys, like the toy bar on his bouncy seat or the toys hanging over his head on the baby gym, it was more like three months.
Try not to worry too much about him holding his head up just yet. If he's able to do it while on a shoulder or something, he's probably fine. I was kind of starting to worry about D b/c I felt like he should be doing it more/better than he was, but he eventually got better and better with it, and when we've gone for his appts at 2, 4, and 6 months, he's always been right on track developmentally. Based on the age listed in your ticker and what you say he's doing, it sounds to me like he's on track.
Thanks!!! I am just always worried about him not doing things that he should be.
