3rd Trimester

I'm going to be a Mommy in 3 days! I have some ?'s

I got the confirmation from the hospital the other day that we are set to be induced early Tuesday morning (Aug 23rd).  I am so excited to finally meet our baby girl but getting very nervous about the whole process of delivery & everything that comes after.  I'm trying to get all of the last minute things done this weekend before my in-laws come in from out of town.  I guess if there is anyone out there that would be willing to answer any of my ?'s I would really appreciate it Smile  TIA

1.  We were told to be @ the hospital @ 12:15 am on the23rd.  Everyone (friends who have had children) have told me to make sure to eat something before going in, however this is not a normal eating time for me & I don't want to eat too much if I do eat something.  Any suggestions of things to eat or should I eat before I go?

2.  How did you sterilize pacifiers for the 1st time?  I have dishwasher baskets to use with the bottles but I was not sure if I should use them or boil water on the stove.

3.  I have tried so hard to make sure that we have everything that we need for the baby & I think we have everything.  But I was wondering if there were any little things that you don't think of before hand that you saw came in handy once home with the baby...either for baby or mom.

4.  Anyone out there that has been induced before have any suggestions or advice of what to expect?  I know that pit is suppose to make things more intense.  I know that I will probably be getting an epi eventually however I want to try to go as far as I can & make progress before getting it.

They say to eat since you'll most likely be in L&&D for a long time. We were set to go in at 6am with DS and with nerves and all I just couldn't eat! It turned out fine though

    2.  How did you sterilize pacifiers for the 1st time?  I have dishwasher baskets to use with the bottles but I was not sure if I should use them or boil water on the stove. For the first time they recommend boiling for 5 mins on the stove. After that you can do the dishwasher thing.

    3.  I have tried so hard to make sure that we have everything that we need for the baby & I think we have everything.  But I was wondering if there were any little things that you don't think of before hand that you saw came in handy once home with the baby...either for baby or mom. Nipple cream, breast pads, a nursing tank or two. Remember, you can always send DH to the store after, so don't stress.

    4.  Anyone out there that has been induced before have any suggestions or advice of what to expect?  I know that pit is suppose to make things more intense.  I know that I will probably be getting an epi eventually however I want to try to go as far as I can & make progress before getting it. They'll probably start by inserting a  pill down there. They might do this twice. It's to get you to start dilating and doesn't hurt. You'll get an IV when you first come in, but it probably wont be hooked into anything for a few hours. My induction lasted 17 hours, which sounds much worse than it was. I got an epi ASAP so I spent the rest of the time talking with friends and family, watching tv and playing on my laptop.

  • 1.  Your friends are telling you this because most hospitals still have the very outdated policy of not allowing eating during labor and labor can be a long process.  I'd ask your doctor about possibly eating during labor, when you are actually hungry, rather than trying to scarf some food when you may or may not be hungry.  Gorging at a weird time just might make you sick.  Then, I'd pack some food to take along and eat whenever you normally do.  Take things that are easy to digest, like you might eat if you weren't feeling too good - non-acidic fruit, granola bars, crackers, chicken noodle soup, maybe some yogurt.

    2.  Pacifiers will have instructions with them on how to sterilize, but really all you need to do is boil on the stove.

    3.  Everyone is different.  We were glad to have velcro swaddles, pacifiers and a moby wrap for baby (as well as diapers).  For me, lots of nipple cream, nursing pads, comfie clothes, tucks, always infinity pads

    4.  Never been induced, so I'm no help

  • 1. PLEASE ask your doc about this and do not listen to others. I was told not to eat past midnight. I see you are going in at that time but I went in at 7 am, they said not to eat in the slight chance I would need to be put under for emergency c section. So ask doc.

    2. I agree boiling is just fine. After that, soapy hot water will do.

    3. I brought my own swaddle recievers. The ones at the hospital smell funny and are all stiff. I will bring my own pads this time as I like them to stick and they give you these ones with nylon wings and they ride up your butt!

    4. I was induced. I can't say it was fun at all, but I was just saying in another post that it kind of depends on how dialated you are when you go in. I was at 1, so it took a long time. My neighbor had her baby in June, she was about 9 days overdue. They gave her pit and she delivered within 5 hours, and only pushed twice or something like that. I did good on pit for 8 hours or so and then really started to feel them. My total time was around 18 hours from start to finish with petocin. Started it at 10 am, got epi at 1 am next day, had baby at 5:19.

I wish I ate before I went to hospital with my DS.  I was in labor for 22 hours and didn't eat for over 25.  I was starving.  I would eat a granola bar, pb & j, bowl of cereal.

    2.  How did you sterilize pacifiers for the 1st time?  I have dishwasher baskets to use with the bottles but I was not sure if I should use them or boil water on the stove.  Boil on stove for 5 min.  Same with bottles.

    3.  I have tried so hard to make sure that we have everything that we need for the baby & I think we have everything.  But I was wondering if there were any little things that you don't think of before hand that you saw came in handy once home with the baby...either for baby or mom.  I hadn't bought any bottles or formula b/c I wanted to BF.  The first day home was very nerve racking for me b/c DS wouldn't latch.  I sent my H out to get bottles and formula in a moment of panic.  I did end up BF for 9 months though.

    4.  Anyone out there that has been induced before have any suggestions or advice of what to expect?  I know that pit is suppose to make things more intense.  I know that I will probably be getting an epi eventually however I want to try to go as far as I can & make progress before getting it.  I was put on pit because I wasn't progressing.  It does make the contractions intense and closer together.  I lasted 5 hours on the pit before I got my epi.  Its a cycle though, the epi kind of slows everything down so then they up the pit.

    Good luck to you!

  • I'll be going in Monday night to start my induction. I was told to eat a light meal before heading to the hospital. I have GD, so I was told I wouldn't feel good if I didn't eat a little something.

You won't want to get too hungry, so maybe have a snack or light meal before you head to the hospital. Would be good to ask your doctor or nurse about it though just to make sure.

Good luck with your induction! We will both be having our babies on Tuesday!

Eat an early dinner that evening if you must, but most DEFINITELY eat something before going in. You won't be allowed to eat anything after going in and you will be STARVING. Eat something that will give you energy - so think PROTEIN not carbs!(I was induced with DD... you'll likely bet here upwards of 12 hours before giving birth, if not more - my SIL was induced and it took her 37 hours.) Bring hard candy with you to L&D, btw! You can thank me later for that tip.

    2.  How did you sterilize pacifiers for the 1st time?  I have dishwasher baskets to use with the bottles but I was not sure if I should use them or boil water on the stove. Sterilize? Hmmm.... I think I just ran them under hot water.

    3.  I have tried so hard to make sure that we have everything that we need for the baby & I think we have everything.  But I was wondering if there were any little things that you don't think of before hand that you saw came in handy once home with the baby...either for baby or mom. Lansinoh Lanolin cream for your nipples, Gripe Water or Mylecon for baby's gas, a heating pad and ice pad for your perineum, huge pads and underwear you don't mind throwing out for that postpartum bleeding, stool softeners and a gentle laxative for mom.

    4.  Anyone out there that has been induced before have any suggestions or advice of what to expect?  I know that pit is suppose to make things more intense.  I know that I will probably be getting an epi eventually however I want to try to go as far as I can & make progress before getting it. You can give birth without an epidural. Mine didn't work, but I wish I hadn't gotten it at all so I could gt on my hands and knees and help her turn - she was posterior, but I was numb from the knees down. Everything starts out slowly and you might get bored. Try to rest as much as you can. Bring entertainment for your DH and maybe yourself - laptop, cards. Bring hard candy, in case they don't even offer broth or Jello to you - as my hospital didn't and I was horribly weak from hunger when it came to pushing. Stay ambulatory as much as you can to speed up the process. Insist on an external monitor so you can walk the halls or roll on the ball or stand in the shower to ease contractions. Make known what you want - who gets to cut the umbilical cord, if you want to nurse your LO as soon as possible, etc. Make sure all batteries in your cameras are charged!!!

    Good luck! :)
