3rd Trimester

how soon is too soon to buy a nursing bra?

I have heard you should pack one with hospital bag. Ive been a consistant 36D for sometime now only gone up from a 34B with pregnancy. I'm just afraid to buy a nursery bra now incase the girls grow more once its closer to EDD. How soon are you buying a nursing bra? are you buying it to fit or a little larger? TIA

Re: how soon is too soon to buy a nursing bra?

  • I've only purchased a sleeping nursing bra up until now (sizes are the standard S-M-L). I think I may wait until after LO arrives to buy a proper one because I do not want to dish out $ for a bra that won't even fit.

Or I may buy a cheap one to have on hand before the delivery and get more after. If I go that route, I will buy one in a week or so.

  • I've gone up one band size and a full cup size (consistent since about 12 weeks), so I've been in mostly nursing bras since then. The cups are smoother inside and more generous, and the bands are a little more forgiving. I buy them on sale at Target and Motherhood and have also found several inexpensive ones on eBay, so they're not costing me any more than regular bras. I've probably averaged $18 on each bra, which I consider super cheap since I'm plus-size and large busted. If I go up yet another size after LO arrives, I'll just buy more.

The ones I've been buying look just like regular bras except for the tiny plastic clips on the straps. I feel comfortable wearing them even when I'm not nursing.

  •  I bought a cheap one at Target and I actually love it more than the Medela I had with my last pregnancy. I bought it a few weeks ago and there is a little room for growth still.  I bought it to fit what size i was now.
  • I've been wearing one since I started getting bigger, about a month into my pregnancy.I've always had a large chest, I was an E then, they're too small now but still wearable. I'll need to bump up a size once baby comes just so I'm comfortable.

  • I clicked on this board on mistake but this post caught my eye.

I went from a prepregnancy 32C to a 34C during pregnancy. After my  milk came in, 3 days after DS was born, I was a 34 E. Now that my milk is regulated I am a 34d or 34DD depending on the brand. Wait as long as you can. I would buy a stretchy one that comes in S,M,L for the hospital and for sleeping in.

  • buy a nursing sleep bra or tank for the first few weeks. Wait to buy real bras until your supply settles. It could change drastically, and good nursing bras aren't cheap!

  • I'm 35 weeks and just bought some today since i've been reading posts about people wearing them during delivery. (i never even thought about what i would wear during delivery til seeing those posts Tongue Tied) i got a sports nursing bra and 2 wireless nursing bras that to me, look like normal bras. If i don't fit into them later i'm not too worried, they were only $12.99 at target

  • I got my first couple of nursing bras in the first trimester because they felt more comfortable to me than my other bras because of the wider straps and stuff. I have a couple of sleep bras too. The last couple I bought were a couple of sizes up from what I normally wear because I read that when the milk comes in they get a little bigger.

  • I'd get a couple nursing tanks and a sleep nursing bra and wait until your boobs regulate in size before getting nursing bras. You may waste your money buying something too small or too big.

  • I bought mine in the hospital shop.  I was soooooo much bigger after my first was born than I was even the day before she was born.

  • I'd suggest nursing tops for the first week or two. Also, there are nursing bras that don't really have cups (and are soft), you can wear them in the beginning. They are sized S, M, etc... Just hold off buying a nursing bra with a cup size until your supply has settled.
