Need sling advice!

Hi Ladies, I know you guys are the sling experts so I need advice. I received a make-shift Moby at my shower ( It wasn't brand name, it was a couple yards of fabric that you just tie and wrap the same way essentially) but I live in Arizona, and it is constantly hot here, even in the winter months, and the Moby is just too much fabric and it gets way to hot for me. So I went to Etsy, and found two different slings that I like. One is a "Ring-Sling" style and the other is a "Sash" style sling where you just throw it over your head and put one arm through. Has anyone had experience in either styles of sling? What do you like or dislike about it? Which one do you think is Safer?

 Thanks Ladies!!!

  • I have a ringsling and i love it, it works wonders, only thing is you have to spread the fabric over your shoulder, almost like a cap sleeve. I wore my son in it from the time he was born. Now he is almost 4years old and a little skinny, so he still is able to fit, but being pregnant its too uncomfortable to wear him in it now.

  • Did it put uncomfortable pressure on your shoulder when you wore him for long periods of time??
  • I used a ring sling with DS2 and loved it. If you spread the fabric out over your whole shoulder it doesn't get sore. I have a hand-me-down sash sling that I will be trying out when LO is born, so I won't have an opinion on that for another few months. I will be using the ring sling again too though b/c the sash sling doesn't adjust for growing baby.

  • I LOVE my ring sling ( I have a maya wrap).  Mine is padded at the shoulder, but my old one was not and neither caused discomfort.  I do have a couple of Hotslings that are okay.  They work at different ages and for short trips, but for me, I didn't use them past 9 months.

  • Ring slings are easier to use and easier to adjust to fit the user and baby.  Pouch slings (the "sash" sling) are really a sized sling and what fits now may not fit later.  I, personally, do not like them.  The one I had when DD was little only fit us both for a short while before she grew enough that it was tight and uncomfortable.

A great place to get a ring sling is sleeping baby productions.  She makes fantastic slings with quality fabrics and provides a lot of support for wearing/instructions/etc.  Also, if you can find a babywearing group near you you can try on several different styles before committing and buying something.  HTH.

  • I don't have a ring sling [but want one!] but do have many other types of carriers.  The sash sling are ok for quick trips but get uncomfortable quickly.  I basically kept one in the car for quick trips into the store/bank etc.  You may also want to consider a mei tei style carrier - they are less fabric [so not as hot] and easy to wear.  They also distribute the weight better over both shoulders and back/waist so I could wear mine for longer periods of time.

It doesnt now that i am wearing it right, before the fabric was bunched up on top of my shoulder and that hurt almost immediately. But worn right, it distributes the weight well

  • I like hotslings for short trips. I've used them with different kids (I'm a nanny) until about 10-12 months.
