Charlie's soap. Biodegradable with no chemicals or sudsing additives (people seem to think if they see bubbles it must mean clean) and just one tablespoon per load does the trick. This little tub lasts forever.
I make my own with zote, borax, and washing soda. I had already been doing it for a while because its super cheap and it takes all of 10 minutes to make 3 wks- a month supply. When I got pregnant I looked up the ingredients and they were all safe to use for infants and newborns. Happily it also means that I won't have to do LO's laundry seperate from the rest of the family's.
Right now I have a bottle of Purex Baby, which I love the smell of. But when we run out, I'll probably use some brand of Free and Clear so that we don't run the risk of irritating Baby's skin. My Brother and my Dad both react to strong dyes and perfumes, so I'm a bit worried that Baby will too. In the past, my family has had great luck with All Free and Clear or Arm and Hammer Free and Clear.
We used Purex or All free and clear prior to DD and continued to use it on her items as well.
Pediatrician told us to wash her stuff in same detergent we use and not one specific for her stuff as she will be up against our clothes, on our bed etc and be exposed to it anyway which makes sense. She also said baby specific detergents are not worth it just get a regular free and clear as it is the same at half the cost generally.
I'll be using dreft for the smell and the fire retardant issue, but if I get tired of washing her clothes seperate or buying a seperate detergent then I'll use the seventh generation I use for the rest of us.

I have been thinking about switching to Purex Free & Clear - do you like it?!
I currently use All Free & Clear. It isn't expensive, but I am not sure how it compares to Purex.

I think it works perfectly fine! I've tried All Free & Clear as well, but Purex is a bit cheaper, and it still gets the job done.
Charlies Soap. Cheap on amazon, but for near the same price you can also get it at Whole Foods. 80 loads = $11.99.
