Need Travel Advice

So we are flying to Seattle in a few weeks, and staying in a hotel for most of the time.

I am much less worried about the flights than I am about sleeping/nap times. At home, we get him ready for nap and then put him in his crib and close his door. Do we bring his monitor and sit in the hall/lobby until he's asleep? Or what have you done?

Also, any suggestions of awesome toys to travel with? We have a DVD player to use for the flight.

Re: Need Travel Advice

  • If it's not possible to get a room that has a bedroom separate from the "living room" I would try bringing a big sheet that you can tack into the ceiling so that he can't see you.  My sister recently did that on their trip and she said it worked well.  They also make sure to bring a sound machine to drown out any noise you and your DH may make.
  • Loading the player...
  • I also suggest a hotel that has a separate bedroom space. I have also had hotel rooms that have had balconies, so after I put DS down for a nap, I sat outside to read while he fell asleep. I guess you could also go sit in the bathroom or outside.

     Good luck!

  • Any time we stay OOT with the kids we have to be out of sight when they go to sleep as well.  One hotel room had a decent amount of space right when you walked in the door and you really couldn't see it from the bed/tv area...that's where the PNP went.  One time there was couch that we pulled out and put the PNP behind it.  You'll probably have to get creative, I like the sheet idea.  Also sitting outside the door could work, but I would get bored waiting...LOL.

As for toys, we didn't bring many because we were usually busy doing something outside the hotel room.  The stuff I did bring was plastic and cleanable.

  • If we are not staying in a suite I usually request an end or corner room because they tend to have an unusual space that you can stick a pack n play in and "hide" from your kid. :) We have to hide for them to go to sleep. I second the noise machine.

At his age he'd probably be tickled pink to have a backpack or other kind of bag with cars, keychains, and other smallish, odd toys to occupy his time.

  • When we were in Chicago recently we just brought along a few extra blankets and draped them over the PNP so Nicholas couldnt see us. I don't know what it was but he slept great (overnight and naps!) while we were there-- we even watched tv quietly while he was falling asleep and he went right down. I think its just because we were so busy all day long, out and about that he was just really tired and went down without a fight. But I will say that Nicholas doesnt have a super strict bedtime routine which maybe was in our benefit in this situation-- we often put him down at friends houses, family's houses, etc.

  • Unfortunately, or fortunately, it's a work trip for my H, so the hotel is paid for by his company... Which is great, but means no suite. I'll definitely check on the end room thing, maybe that would work!

When we've stayed at a hotel in the past with him, we've just rocked him to sleep - but for a 10 day trip, I'm not going to screw up his sleep routine like that! We might have to try the sheet thing! :)

    Thanks ladies!
