Help w/ pantry and general kitchen organization

Hi, I'm new to the board and am temp SAH for the next 5+ months. I'm trying to take this opportunity to organize my house. Right now I"m working on cleaning my pantry, fridge, and freezer out and then coming up with an organization system. I realized that I waste a ton of food (which I hate) b/c I have no idea what's lurking in the back of the pantry/freezer, etc. Any tips/suggestions on how you organize snacks, jars, dried goods (beans, pasta, etc), frozen foods and then how you keep track of what you do/don't have in storage? No that I have a toddler I have a variety of dried beans, pasta, rice, grains, snacks, nut mixes, etc.

TIA!

  • I got some slide out metal drawers from either the container store or bed, bath and beyond.  They are just baskets that attach to the pantry shelf that slide out so you can see what is in the back.  You can also get baskets or bins and label them for what is in them (pasta, snacks, grains etc) so you can lift the entire bin down and see everything that is inside.

  • I have 2 baskets in my freezer (I ordered them from The Container Store). I use one for ice packs, freezie treats, etc. (single and slide around otherwise), the other holds open bags of items such as chicken nuggets.  It's easier to pull either basket out and find what I need.  Other boxed items and ice cream still fit in next to the baskets.

For our pantry, I bought a clear over-the-floor shoe holder.  It's awesome for individualized items like granola bars, popcorn packets, fruit snacks, etc.  It really cuts down on all the half empty boxes in the pantry and frees up some space.

    That's a great idea.

  • cute canisters, bins, and boxes saved my kitchen!

I still waste too much food though

  • Thank you for posting this. Our pantry has become very unorganized lately and it's making me crazy. I really need to do something about it.
