Possibly Stupid Question for Repeat C-section Mamas

At my last dr. appointment last week, my dr. did my group b strep test an internal exam.  She said that she felt the babies head, but wanted to order an ultrasound for my next visit to check his position, because she was still feeling something hard up by my rib cage, which could be baby's bottom.  I guess my question is, why would she want to check the position of the baby if I'm having a repeat c-section in 2 weeks?  I didn't think it mattered because regardless of his position I am having a c-section, because my pelvis is too small to deliver vaginally (We found out with my daughter after 15 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing, so this one would more than likely result the same).  Also I don't understand what she meant by when she said she could feel the baby's head.  I never had this happen with my daughter, I was barely dilated with her until the evening I went into labor.  My appointment is tomorrow, so I will get all this answered tomorrow, i was just wondering if any of you repeat c-section ladies have had an ultrasound ordered at roughly 37 weeks to check the position of the baby too???

  • Are you dilating? I'm not sure why the position matters in a repeat c. I had a c/s with DS because he was breech and I was having some complications. I am thinking of going for a VBAC but I'm not sure. I would just be happy to see my baby via u/ again. I love getting ultrasounds :)

  • She didn't say anything about my dilating, so i figured I wasn't.  She just said she could feel baby's head and that he was nice and low.  I'm excited to see our little man one more time before I deliver on the 1st, but was a bit confused as to why she was ordering it.  Oh well, at least I get to see him almost full term and see his sweet face one last time in my belly before I have the c.

  • It matters to the doctor because they can usually use the same incision as the first c-section if the baby is turned normal or breech. However, if the baby is transverse, they may have to make a new incision. So it does depend on how the baby is positioned. My doctor will order an ultrasound around the same time to check position as well..

  • My OB said that it doesn't really matter the position if you are having a c-section. She did say that if they are breech it is harder for them to get the baby out but nothing to be concerned about.

  • I had almost the exact same labor as you and will be having a repeat c-section. My OB told me that he will do an ultrasound to confirm the position of the baby so they know what to expect during the surgery. Even though they are cutting you open to pull the baby out there is still some finesse that goes into how they get them out quickly and safely. Knowing the baby is in an odd position can save them from having to cut in the wrong place. That is what he told me anyway. Also, I think they can usually feel the baby's head if you are a tiny bit dialated or just by feeling your stomach they can make and educated guess.

  • Thank you everyone, that makes more sense to me now.  Only 2 more weeks to go until we meet this little guy!  Curious to see what the ultrasound says about what he roughly weighs right now.  My daughter was 8lbs 9oz and 22 inches long, so im guessing he will probably follow in his big sisters footsteps.  My husband is 6'3 and I'm only 5'1, he must have the master genes when it comes to our children's sizes:)
