We've done purees for a few weeks now (didn't start until just after 6 mo), and H gobbles it up each time so I feel like she is ready for more solid food. But the thought of putting something more solid in her mouth scares me to death since she has no teeth. Last night I took some ripe banana and cut it into slices thinking she could feed herself - then thought better of it and cut the slice into quarters, and then still was worried so I just mashed it up and fed it with a spoon. ![]()
What am I supposed to start with that I don't have to worry (as much) about her choking on? Yogurt melts? That's the only think I can think of that would dissolve if she swallowed it whole....
Re: What's after purees.... with no teeth?
We are on stage 3 foods and some table food and P has no teeth. She does just fine with gumming it down. Just make sure the food is soft or small enough where it's okay for her to just swallow it.
P also does will with Yogurt Melts, Puffs and Cheerios. She nums on MumMums pretty well when she's not feeding it to the dog.
Well, DS is 9 months old (today!) and still has no teeth and no signs of them coming anytime soon.
We give him lots of table food: toast, cherrios, puffs, graham crackers, pancakes, waffles, bananas, melon, really well cooked veggies (carrots, peas, etc.), pieces of sliced cheese, chunks of shredded cheese.
I just make sure it's all in pretty small pieces and he does great. It's so cute to watch him eat something a little harder like cherrios since he totally moves it all around his mouth with his tongue and makes a little chewing motions with his gums.
when griff was about 6 months we tried giving him a mum mum and he bit off a piece and choked. scared the crap out of me so i stopped giving him finger foods. a few weeks ago i gave another mum mum and he ate it perfectly. guess he wasnt ready at 6 months. he doesnt have teeth, btw.
hes still on purees but has also eaten toasted whole wheat bread, fruit/veggie melts, cheese puffs, cheesestrings, cheerios and turkey.
My nephew eats cheeseburgers with 6 teeth (he's 16 months old). You'd be amazed what they can gum down!
I agree with PP - puffs, melts, Cheerios, and lil' crunchies are good since they melt so fast. The trick is to let them cough and gag a little - she has to learn how to move food around her mouth with her tongue and its inevitable that she'll cough a little. Keep an eye out for real choking and try to refrain from swiping everything out of her mouth at a little cough.
Good luck!
