Take DS to 20-week u/s or no?

DS is super interested in "the baby in mommy's belly".  I took him with me to my ob appointment on Friday and he got to hear the baby's heartbeat.  Our 20-week u/s is a week from tomorrow and I was thinking about bringing DS along.  I just don't want him to get restless.  We have a u/s every 4 weeks so we could always take him as I get further along, esp since we're not finding out the gender.  WWYD?

  • I'm wondering about this too. Mine will be just over 2 when we need to go for the "big" ultrasound. He's a handful though and will probably not sit still for this so I might have to get a babysitter.

  • I was told no children under 7 for mine, so you might want to check. Honestly, I think it was better that my DD wasn't there, she's too distracting.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't. I remember the big u/s being really long and I don't know if DD would sit still long enough. Besides, what if (god forbid) they find something bad on u/s, I wouldn't want her seeing DH and me all distressed. I'd like to take her to an u/s at some point, but probably further along in the pregnancy (my DD will be just over 3 when we have our big u/s).
  • DS is 2.5 and he's pretty curious too but I'm leaving him at daycare.  He will be far too difficult to entertain.. I can only imagine the things he'll try to get into if I took him.  Hopefully, DH will be able to go which would help but he would be coming straight from work and probably wouldn't be able to grab DS on the way.

  • Our doctors office has a no children policy for ultrasounds so you may want to check.  Also, I had an impromptu ultrasound at 12 weeks as the nurse couldn't find the heartbeat and I was worried.  I had both kids in the office so I had to take them.  It was a shorter ultrasound than the 20 week but it was still stressful for me making sure they were quiet during the test.

  • DD will be coming to all of my appts, including the u/s. Part of it is necessity-I don't really have anyone to watch her at that time of day, and part of it is that I want her to be as involved as possible.

  • We took DD to our a/s ultrasound this past week. I wouldn't have if DH wouldn't have been able to be there though. She packed a couple toys in her backpack, but she didn't really need them because she was very interested in what was going on. DH was also able to contain her the one time she did get restless. I would bring her again if I get the chance, but if you think you wouldn't feel comfortable with it then don't.

  • We had no choice but to take DS with us. DH was trying to entertain him the entire time. Of course DS was his usual terror, the child can't sit still to save his life. We survived, I guess. But your LO is older. I'd probably bring him.

  • I took DS to my very 1st US and my most recent one.  Didn't take him to the 20 week US beacuse it would just be way too long for him.  But he loved coming and seeing the baby!

  • I thought about taking DD to one of my u/s, but in the end decided against it.  She has virtually no attention span and probably wouldn't have really understood it anyway.  Plus, my 20 week u/s took forever.

Definitely check on the doctor's policy though, I had never even thought about them not letting her in.

  • DD came to mine, but DH was there to take care of her. If he hadn't been there, it would have been really hard. It took about 45 minutes and she was done after 30. He ended up taking her outside and letting her walk around while the tech finished.
  • Thanks girls!  I just called my MFM and they said I can bring DS if there will be another adult present, which my DH will be.  They said the u/s will be 45 minutes long however.  I have a u/s every 4 weeks so I asked if the later ones were shorter and they said yes, so I think that's what we'll do.  Besides, that way he'll be that much older and that much closer to the baby being born to make the association.  Thanks for your advice!

  • DS went to most of mine with DD. He was only 18 months-2 years. (I had to go every two weeks from 10 weeks to 36, so there were a lot of them. lol)

He found it fascinating from the beginning. But our lab tech was amazing and would point out all the baby's features- she even let him hold the wand once and squirt the gel on my belly. She just loved kids. We had a different tech once (a sub I guess), and she barely talked the entire time. DS was pretty bored, but it was over quickly.

There is no harm in giving it a try!

  • We took DD - She talked through out the entire thing, and really didn't care about what was happening.

She did sit in H's lap the entire time and for the most part was good, just chatty.
