3rd Trimester

Meetings From 8am to 3pm. How to survive? Help!

Seriously...

If you have any tips on surviving mindnumbingly boring back to school meetings please let me know.

I was in a car accident (drunk driver) in June and my hips are so screwed up that that I can't do anything but lean very far back and sprawl. Have yet to figure out how to do this in a hard wooden chair and retain any sense of civility. Sprawling saves my hips but my ribs are a mess from the seat belt and most likely won't heal until after the baby is born. I can stand but that is also an awful lot of standing and my back gets tired.

My OB said I can go out whenever I want. I was planning on doing the whole 4 weeks before thing. Tomorrow may tell the tale...

  • I would just explain the car accident and apologize for sprawling out and/or ask to stand part of the time.  If any of these help, ask for a cushioned office chair or bring something to sit on, ask for breaks to stretch or walk around.  If there's anything at all that helps you, I would try not to be shy about asking for it.  Hopefully, people will be understanding between pregnancy and a drunk driver hitting you.

  • Ditto what PP said - the only other thing that i would suggest is that i am often much more comfortable on an exercise ball than a regular chair. If that applies to you, bring your exercise ball - might be a little odd initially but people will get used to it.

  • That sounds horrible!  I'm so sorry.

What about sitting on a boppy or a cushion?  If I were in your place, I'd probably let my supervisor know in advance (if she doesn't know already) and reposition myself a lot.  Like, I'd sit one way until that's uncomfortable, then get up and stretch then sit again.  You can also use the fact that you'll probably have to pee every 10 minutes as an excuse to get up and move around.

Also, I would bring my own chair.  Sitting in a wooden chair all day during your third trimester sounds bad enough, considering you're recovering from a car accident on top of that, that's just unbearable.

  • Why can't you just stand in the back and walk? I've never felt like I have to sit in a chair during school meetings, esp when 8 months pregnant and after a car accident.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
