3rd Trimester

Baby Karly is here!

Karly Christine arrived on Agust 9th at 8:06 am via planned c-section! My stubborn breech girl was still in her favorite spot so we went ahead with surgery. Prepping and spinal bloack went well. The spinal was a wierd feeling! After it hit... they kinda helped flop me down into position. I wasn't too excited about the 'prepping' portion of all this... they gave me a crappy shave job. Real nice, guys... Anyways.

Hubby came in right as they were giving me IV antibiotics and starting the c section. Immediate nausea hit me like a ton of bricks. My DH was standing up at at the moment and I felt like no one could hear me say " I am about to puke...". Luckily one of the nurses did, and I was given something right away. I didn't feel the 'pressure' like people say.

And then- we hear her cry. I thought I would be a mess. All I could think about was 'get this over with already'. The doc held her up- she was pink already! DH went to her side while she was cleaned up and looked over. What a fiesty little girl! Screaming, kicking and mad as could be! I finally let my self cry when I was able to see her. DH held her for awhile while suture was taking place. They escorted my new family out to the nursery area while they got me into recovery.

In recovery, we were brough back together. Karly weighed 6 pounds 2 ounces and 20 inches long. I guessed she would weight 6# 4 oz... pretty close! We gave breast feeding a try- she seemed to know what she was doing. (Later, we would have a fiasco with that...but thats another long story!) What a beautiful little face...thats all I could think about.

Recovering for the c/ s has been an adventure and not so much fun. On day 2, I was pretty painful, despite good drugs frequently. The pain and pressure form gas alone was enough to make me not want to move. On day 3 I woke up to milk coming in and a baby who suddenly refused to latch. By that afternoon I was sporting some serious DDD's...and was in severe pain. NOT a good time.

We are home now, doing great! we have had to make a hard choice with breastfeeding- it looks like I am going to be exclusively pumping. Hopefully my supply will meet the demand...

  • Congratulations!! Can't wait to see pictures!

I'm opting for a repeat C-Section this time so it was nice to read your birth story regarding your CS to refresh my memory! I also exclusively pumped for the entire first year, so I can relate on that front as well!

  • Congrats.  I know you did not ask for advice but don't give up on the latch its SO early.  Find a Lactation Consultant or go to your local La Leche League for help.  Just because she has taken to the bottle doesn't mean you can't get her to latch.  I'm giving advice from personal experience because when my son and I had a hard time in the beginning I thought pumping would be easier (and it was in the beginning) but I didn't give up completely and we finally got it down with the help of a nipple shied and I am so glad I didn't decide to EP it would have been so hard once he got older and wanted to play, etc when I had to pump.  Not to mention breastfeeding is so emotional once things become easier for both of you.  Again I'm not trying to tell you what to do just giving some friendly advice. :)

Advice well taken, actually. She will still latch- I had her do so last night and again tonight. The problem seems to be my right nipple or something about her nursing on that side that bugs her. I have a shield...and I am thinking about giving it a try tomorrow first thing in the am. I do like the bonding of actual breast feeding. We had such a friggin nightmare with her screaming when she was put on my right side.

Congrats!    If we have another girl we are most likely going to name her Caroline and call her Carly.  :)  Such a cute name.

The right side thing might have nothing to do with your nipple.  My daughter had a sort of "crick" in her neck from the way she was positioned in the womb and favored one side over the other in the beginning.  I took her to my chiropractor (who specializes in pregnancy and children) and after a session she was much better and didn't seem to favor one side or the other.

We also saw a chranio- sacral therapist who helped us with related issues due to her unfavorable position in the womb (her plates were overlapping on her head- very common, but not something people usually know what to do with).    Both treatments seemed to help her immensely.

I second seeing a LC.  Using props like the nipple shield can be a very slippery slope in the beginning.   Some LCs will even come to your home...which is something we did.  It was seriously the best experience and helped me continue my BF relationship with my DD which lasted 15 months.

Well that is fantastic that she is still nursing at least on the left.  Please do find some help to see what the problem with the right side is.  As a PP mentioned there are a few common reasons why she may not be taken to that side that can be very easily fixed.  At the hospital I delivered at going back for lactation consultation is free and of course La Leche League is always a free service for mothers.  Many times leaders will come to your house if you are having problems.  If you can figure out why it will be much easier to continue to breastfeed.  Good luck!

Do I think every woman needs a nipple shield absolutely not.  But are they helpful in certain situations absolutely.  I disagree that they are a "slippery slope", studies have shown that nipple shields that are used today (of soft silicone) do not effect milk supply.  Granted its an additional step to wean from it once breastfeeding is established but thats about it.  I think women get scared to use them (I was one of them...and I did have an inverted nipple that took months to withdraw but with the help of a nipple shield I also BF until my son self weaned at 14 months).  Now my nipple is still erect so I hope that I don't have to use it this time but I do NOT regret using it, I think it really helped us continue to breastfeed.  But I also think that you should get help and support from professionals, my LC was the one who encouraged me to use the nipple shield.
