3rd Trimester

disappointed in hospital tour

So we had our hospital tour today and I now realize I was spoiled with DD and my expectations are super high now. With DD the birthing center in VA was newer, we labored/delivered/recovered in the same room. The rooms where huge, we had mini fridges, tables and chairs, sofa, nice big windows in every room, flat screens with dvd players, huge walk in showers. The baby never left the room, first bath, shots everything was done right there with you present.

The hospital I am delivering at here in TX is bigger but older, labor/delivery rooms and your room to stay are separate. The rooms are tiny and dark, some don't have windows so no natural light, they take the baby to the nursery for first bath and shots. DH can go but I have to stay in recovery. The staff seemed nice which was a plus.

I love my OB so won't switch just to go to another hospital but I am disappointed. Just not happy about it at all. I know it is only a few days but I feel blah about it now.

Anyone else with 2+ who delivered at different hospitals feel similarly?

Re: disappointed in hospital tour

  • I haven't delivered two babies but I've seen two different birth centers and I feel where you coming from.  The first one I saw was Duke Medical when I was living in Durham.  it was very very spacing and had all the thing you mentioned in you VA hospital.  Now I moved to Fayetteville and Cape Fear looks different to me than Duke.  To me Duke seemed like a nicer facility with all that space and accessories to go with it.

  • I am totally not bagging on you or being snarky, but I watched a special on the African Drought the other day that put it all in prospective for me.
There was a woman who was pregnant on a 100 mile walk to find food for her family.
She went into labor and gave birth on the dirt road with help from other women that saw what was happening. She had the baby then had to continue on the walk to the nearest town. Which was still about 25-50 miles away.

I am seriously just grateful I have a hospital to go to.

  • I would ask if everything can be done in your room. They may not be able to grant this request, but you can always ask.

I fully understand what you are getting at and you are right.  It could be a lot worse and I should be grateful.

That's why I pointed out how I was spoiled with the first delivery. We had no intentions of having anymore LO's so never looked into hospitals when choosing my OB when we moved.  Otherwise I would have chosen a different one when looking into birthing/women's centers. The hospital I will deliver at has a 1980's feel to the rooms and just way outdated compared to my experience with my daughter.

  • I'll be honest the difference between the womens centers at the two large hospitals in town was WHY we chose the one we did. We did our fertility treatments at one but for the OB care we switched to the one with the great NICU and Women's Center.

We've been estatic since the switch the staff is phenomenal much more personable! Its almost like 1 is a Walmart (the first one) which has the monopoly on the market, a little more affordable and deals in volume.

However, had we not liked the OBs at the hospital we are delivering at I would have given up the gorgeous rooms, on-site spa and luxuries to have an OB that I loved...

  • If it makes you feel any better, the place you are disappointed with sounds exactly like where I delivered my DS and it was perfectly fine.  The only thing that really got to me was that the delivery room had no windows and I was there for 3 days.  To be honest, I kind of wish the room where I was delivering and the room where I recover were different (different hosp this time) b/c I soooo needed a change of scenery after DS's labor taking forever.
