i heard about "baby led weaning" from a friend and I am thinking about trying it when my LO is 6 months. Has anyone heard of this and what do you know about it?
This thread has a lot of good information! We're also planning on trying it once DS reaches 6 months. I know a handful of babies doing BLW now and they're all such good eaters!
We just started giving DS some finger foods this week. He seems to be doing great with it. Pretty much, whatever we are eating we put on the tray of his high chair and let him play with. I'm not too concerned with his actual consumption at this point. wholesomebabyfood.com also has some good info on BLW. And, the Attachment Parenting board has a lot of regulars who practice it.
This is our plan. I also have never liked the idea of cereal - unless for reflux or weight gain - so I'm glad to skip that one all togehter.
This. I would love to skip cereal and wait until my daughter is 6 months, and simply introduce some simple food purees.
I plan on waiting until she is at least a year before I try BLW. I would prefer to do it that way than quit cold turkey, it seems like it'll be more pleasant for the both of us.
I'm interested in it. We will either do it, home made purees, or a combo of both.
This for us. I had no idea there was a name for this. We've said from the start that if we just feed her what we're having, hopefully she won't be a picky eater later on. *Knocks on wood...*

We are going to do it. Our first kid is the worst eater ever (getting solids into him, no matter what it was, was a struggle until he was about 2). I tried it all with him, homemade purees, cereals, mashed foods, jarred food, he just didn't like any of it. So we are going to go a whole different way with this kid.

This exactly, except it's STILL a struggle. My 3 year old lives on air. My answer is, if we did it with DS and food, we are NOT doing it with DD. But their personalities are so different, I know she's going to be a whole different ballgame.

I am really excited to do BLW. I never liked the idea of cereal. I am kinda sad that I won't get to make my own baby food (I was looking forward to that) but I have a feeling this will be a better approach for us. DH is on board, but my parents are not...we will see what happens!

You may have an idea of what BLW is that isn't quite accurate. BLW isn't about weaning in the sense of reducing nursing, it is about giving babies solid foods that they feed themselves and giving purees only if it is a food the family otherwise eats pureed. So, with BLW a baby would feed himself applesauce on a spoon but with something like carrots he would eat a steamed carrot stick rather than mashed up carrot. Generally with BLW, nursing continues to be the primary form of nutrition until age 1 when a baby naturall chooses to eat more solids.
I've just recently heard of this and read just a little bit on the topic and it sounds very interesting! I'll study this more in depth before deciding whether it's something I'd like to try. I still have plenty of time as I've always planned on waiting until DD is at least 6 months of age before introducing solids.

We'll be doing BLW.
SarahL77 referenced 2 good sites, but also check out this blog:

She has a section that goes week by week what she gave her daughter. It's nice to see it in practice.
