marriage on people's lawns right now. California has Prop 8 on the ballot which would eliminate same sex marriage in Ca.
Anyway, it's weird and I am really surprised to see how many people have them on my street. We have 'no on 8' signs too but not nearly as may it seems.
Care to share how you are voting if you are in Ca or would vote if you lived here?
Re: It's so weird to see the signs to eliminate same-sex
Florida has something similar on the ballot. I've seen people who have signs on their lawn that say "One man. One Woman. Vote Yes blah blah blah"
I had visions of stopping the car and kicking the sign. I guess that answers how I feel, huh?
Indiana has had a ballot initiative a few years in a row for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, but it hasn't made it to the ballot yet. Thankfully, I guess. I'd vote against it, but IN is pretty conservative.
I lived in Michigan a few years ago when they had it on the ballot and I voted against it there - I was pretty shocked by how high of a number voted for the ban - it passed I think.

I'm going to C&P from a response to a friend on another board about Prop 8:
I am HOPING it will fail. And I'd say in our area the signs I see most are for NO/YES on 8 and also regarding a school redistricting.
I believe in separation of church and state. Obviously not everyone in CA has a religion, and it's obviously not the same for those who do. If your religions or beliefs don't agree, teach it to your kids at home. After all, isn't that what certain families do at home? (ex. if DD is taught something in school that doesn't exactly align with our belief system, I see it as my responsibility to say, "You learned this, but what our faith teaches is this.")
People are SO up in arms about not wanting their children to learn about gay marriage in school. The dumb thing is, NO WHERE in Prop 8 is education mentioned!! People are just jumping to the conclusion that if Prop 8 is passed, that second graders are going to be engaged in discussions about single-sex couples, etc. Um, no!
I really hope Prop 8 fails.

What is so weird about it? Is it weird to you that same-sex marriage is an issue, or weird that people would be against it? FWIW, I'm for same-sex marriage but I wouldn't think it was weird to see signs of people who think differently.
I'm voting No on 8.
I see way more yes on 8 signs in my very conservative hood. I don't have any politico signs in my yard as my views aren't in line w/ the neighbors.
And honestly, the Yes on 8 signs actually make me so sad. They make me more sad than angry about inequality.

lmao at gettting out and kicking the sign!
i really don't see why people even care who other people marry. it doesn't affect your marriage so butt out!

I think what irks me the most is the pro Prop 8 signs that claim the amendment will protect freedom of speech. It's pathetic the people really believe some of the pro Prop 8 propaganda.
I have no problem that others don't agree with my opinion. I still think they're reasoning is wrong and I hope Prop 8 gets voted down.
I wouldn't vote against gay marriage, but I honestly don't care about the issue all that much. I'm always surprised by the number of strong opinions on here. Some of the issues that most bring up (ie, right to visit in a hospital etc) are really moot especially if you draw up papers to make your wishes known.
Ironically, I think that gay marriage would serve the goals of many that think they are against it. For instance, I think that some see it as having to do with health insurance privileges etc. My brother lives in CA and had his girlfriend on his insurance plan which always annoyed me for some reason. I guess because they could get married and obviously had chosen not to for some reason. So if anybody can legally marry anybody they want to then you would get away from the theory that you have to allow any couple that says "sure we're committed" to share benefits etc.
I'm sure I'll get flamed - don't get me wrong. I'm not against it at all, I just feel a lot more strongly about a lot of issues that I think are more important.
I think it's weird so many people care about who someone else, that they are not related to and in many cases do not even know, marries. I really don't care who other people marry, and maybe I am ignorant of the propositions that are out there, but I don't see how they effect others.

One of the main reasons I registered to vote here instead of getting an absentee ballot from VA is that I want to vote NO on 8. ?
?I'm pretty disgusted when I see "Vote Yes" signs on lawns in my neighborhood and I make a mental note not to go out of my way to be neighborly to those people--why would I even bother to befriend people who would take away the rights of other humans? ?
It's Amendment 2 here in FL.
I think anyone would have to be very brave to say they would vote against.
but, I will do it. I am a Christian and I would vote against gay marriage. I am not hateful, or or judgemental but that is what I believe.
SC voted it down in the last election. Surprise, surprise.
I love the post about kicking the sign. That's what I would want to do too.
And to the poster who didn't get why people feel so strongly about it, it is a HUGE deal. People are being discriminated upon. Love is love. Be it man woman, man man, woman woman. Love is love.
You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
I'm Christian too. I will defend a gay couple's right to be legally married until I'm not able too.
You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
I'm in NC and I don't think we have anything like that coming up... but if we did it would be how its worded as to how I would vote. I don't think the government should be 'marrying' anyone. Marriage, to me- IMO, is a Sacrement, a religious thing. However I do think people should be able to have unions with each other that affect them in a governmental/legal way. Bascially how you go to get a 'marriage' license would be to get a union between person and the Marriage itself would be something separate within a church (or the like) enviroment.
So, I don't support "gay marriage", but if 2 men or women, or a man and a woman want to make a legal contract recognised by the government then sure! However, I do think then if a man and 2 women (or any combo therein) of all legal consenting age want to form a union then they should be allowed to as well. Now I wouldn't ever do polygmy (sp?) but I do think consenting adults should beable to form into legal unions in whichever way they feel best for them.
As such, marriages would be kept separate from any state/federal matters and so churches could do their thing however their beliefs deem faithful. And what the gov't would recognise could be different.
However, if the gov't allows all types of unions then the schools could actually allow, teach and read books where the family unit is made up of 2 moms or 2 dads or a mom and a dad, etc... Which some schools have been in the news for such books already anyway. So yes, the kids could learn about the different ways to couple in school- well at least public schools.
