Flying

I know this has been posted a couple times but for you ladies that have flown did the airport/ airline require you to have an paperwork from your doctor that cleared you to fly? My hubby and I are going to Colorado a week from today and I dont want to get there and not have something like that. Also is it true to opt out of the full body scanner and get the pat down?
Thanks ladies!

Re: Flying

  • I just flew last week (at 26 weeks) and will be flying again at 29 weeks.  They didn't ask me for any paperwork, and they did allow me to opt out of the full body scan.  I think maybe after a certain point in your pregnancy they don't want you to fly (maybe 35 weeks?)

  • it might depend on the airline. I remember another post where someone said that certain airlines have different rules.

maybe call the airline.  They also may not believe you when you tell them your due date.

  • I just flew this week and they didn't ask me anything about when I was due.  When I went through security at 2 major airports, I was just waved past the full body scan, no "full pat down" required.  They just had me walk through the metal detectors grab my bags and be on my way.

  • I flew at 33 weeks and had a doc's note but was never asked for it. They never even put me in the group to get padded down or through the body scanner. Just the metal detectors. It was really no big deal. While flying I walked to the furthest bathroom to stretch my legs every hour or so. I did notice some swelling and mad crazy charlie horses afterwards.
  • I actually used to work at the airport for the security (I was able to quit thank God) and most of the screeners will not put an obvious-looking pregnant woman through the xray machine, just through the metal detector.. no big deal... There are always those few however, that will make you get the pat down.. but it's honestly not as bad as the media has made it out to be I promise! As for the airline requiring documentation about flying, I would check their website or call them.. but I don't see why they would not allow you to fly unless you had complications or something like that.

  • I flew at 27 weeks and didn't need any documentation.  I wasn't planning on bringing anything when I fly this weekend at 33 weeks, but the doctor gave me a "clearance to fly" on a prescription pad to bring just in case.  Especially since I'll be coming home at 34 weeks.

  • I opted out of the body scanner at Boston Intl when I was only 11 weeks along and not showing at all. The guard just took my word for it and motioned me over into the regular metal detector line. No fuss, no hassle.

  • I flew Delta Airlines in my 26th week and they didn't require any paperwork. They said not until the 37th-38th week. You can also get pre-boarding! As far as security, I flew through two international airports and both allowed me to just go through the metal detector. Good luck!
