41 weeks today! Had a non-stress test done and baby is looking great. Apparently I'm having contractions and I didn't even know it. After 4.5 weeks with no progress beyond 1.5 cm I am finally 2 cm. I know its not much, but considering 4.5 weeks of nothing its great news to me! I finally had to have another induction talk with the dr. I had declined the first one because I want her to come on her own, but now it just looks like its not going to happen. Dr says at this point its medically necessary. Sunday afternoon I go in for cervical ripening and if nothing by Monday morning they will start pitocin. I've done everything right this pregnancy and just don't understand why I can't do it on my own. Its discouraging, but I'm still trying to be my optimistic self.
Well, it looks like my LO is going to have a Aug. 15th birthday!
Re: 41 week Dr. appt
My dr doesn't allow anyone to go past 41 weeks. After I saw I made a little progression I convinced him to let me go until Sunday. Every dr is different.
Your doctor can't force you to be induced. You still have to consent to it. And you don't have to.
At some point around 40 wks the placenta starts not being able to fully support the fetus and a few weeks after that, it stops being viable. The risk becomes too great to just wait.
Yeah. This is why NSTs are done, which is what happened here. The placenta doesn't magically shut off at 41 weeks, and the risk between 41 and 42 weeks is negligible unless other inductions of distress are presented.
OP, if you trust your doc, and are OK with the induction at this point, fantastic. You just sounded frustrated by the possibility, and I just wanted to pipe up and offer that you are still in control of your health care decisions. Not your doc.
I agree with ToledoDeux. 41 weeks is not a sentence for induction. My mother was 3 weeks late with my sister and she was positive of her conception date. My sister was born at about 8 1/2 lbs, so a pretty averaged size baby.
You have every right to refuse induction and allow the baby to come on his/her own, of course if that's what you choose. The more dilated you are the better an induction will work, but maybe try doing things this weekend that can bring labor on naturally. Some women use EPO (evening primrose oil), have lots of sex, vacuum stairs if you have them, go for long walks, eat spicy foods, etc.
Good luck!! I hope your LO comes on his/her own.

I know it's easier said than done but don't be too discouraged. As my due date nears I feel like I'm going to be pregnant forever! I was feeling really bad, like it's my fault or something, the other day- crying and being all crazy-pregnant-womanish.
Maybe baby will come on his/her own before Monday.
But it's ok if not too! Don't look at it like a failure.
I totally hear you. I'm 41 weeks 1 day and I was given until Sunday for this baby to come on his/her own. I'm being induced tomorrow (Sunday getting a bed was iffy). As I have learned, many induction theories/schools of thought are regionally based/hospital based. I'm in Boston and typically they don't let you go more than 10-11 days past due. As much as I am dreading being induced tomorrow, I dread more something happening and me not having had just decided to induce since we know the baby is fine as of now. I'm just going with it. I hate it, but I'm going with it. And as much as people tell me I'm in control of my body and my medical decisions, I'm a principal, not a medical expert or doctor and I have to trust the woman who has guided me through this whole thing knows what she is doing is best for me and for my baby.
God Speed!
