Any other '06 kids NOT starting K this year?

I feel like DS is the only one here! The cutoff is September 1st for public school, but Decemeber 31st for the charter schools we are looking at. I know he's not ready, so he'll just stay in preschool another year. It would be nice to save the money, but not at his expense!

Re: Any other '06 kids NOT starting K this year?

  • We're waiting another year. Sept 1st is the cutoff in our district.

  • My daughter is going to be in Pre-K in the fall.  She is an 07 bday, but there are at least 6 kids in her class born in '06.  I wouldn't worry, I'm sure you made the right decision for your DC!

  • Claire is doing VPK this year.  She misses the cutoff for K.
  • The cutoff here is 9/30.

Neither of my December babies will start K until they are 5 3/4. DS has one more year in PreK and I am glad. I don't think he's anywhere near ready for kindergarten. He's still way too immature.

  • We waited until this year to put ds in pre-school because he won't start K until next year. He'll be nearly 6 yrs old (Nov 28 b-day).

  • we debated starting this year her birthday is 10/1 and the cutoff is 12/2 but I just didn't think she was ready. She wouldn't be five till a month and a half after school started this year and I just thought she was too immature and another year of preschool would help her

  • I was just thinking about this a few hours ago! DD misses the cutoff by a month and it's always plagued me as to whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. My DD's BFF is 2 months older than her, and her BFF is starting school and DD isn't. I'm so worried that this will cause them to not be close when they get older because they will be in different grades. It's nice to know that my kid isn't the only one not starting K this year. Kinda bittersweet I guess.

  • We are also waiting another year because of the cut off date,
  • DD1 makes the cut-off this year, but only by 3 weeks. We are holding her back because her teachers brought up concerns about her not being ready. We questioned it as well. Additionally, she was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder which interferes with her learning, so we think another year to learn to adapt to this will help her. Academically she is more than ready, it's the maturity thing (not being able to sit still, needing frequent redirection, difficulty staying on task, distractibility etc) where the issue lies. Our school offers a preK program for kids that meet the cut-off but aren't quite ready for K so she will be going to that. It's actually the old Kindergarten curriculum. Since now K is more like what 1st grade was for us.

  • Our cutoff is September 1st and Alyssa's bday is in November, so she won't be starting until next year. When I started school, the cutoff date was January 31st, so she would have totally made it, though she would have been a super young K-er. I'm glad they changed the age, I'd rather my kids be the older ones in the class than younger; personal preference I guess.

  • DS misses the 12/1 cutoff by two weeks and I'm glad. He's ready academically but can definitely use the extra year to mature a bit emotionally and socially.

  • October baby here not starting K. I'm fine with it. No need to rush into adulthood
  • The cutoff here is August 1, so DS has one more year.  I've heard they are bumping it back a month each year until it gets to December, which just seems really young to me.  There's no way he'd be ready to go now.

  • Our cutoff is Sept 1. DD's birthday is Oct 11, so she will be in preschool again this year. I think she would be ready for kindergarten, but she'll be fine waiting another year.
  • DD's a late Nov birthday and our cutoff is 9/15.  I think she'd do fine, but our district doesn't make any exceptions, to my knowledge.

So another year of preschool it is!

  • I believe the cutoff here is Sept 1. DD has a December birthday, so she will have one more year of preschool this year and then kindergarten next year.

  • DS1 was a Dec. '05 baby, and he's starting this year.  So it's not just the '06 babies that are starting.  Sounds like your son will be starting right on time!  Personally, I like the Nov/Dec birthdays, because it gives them plenty of time to mature before starting kindergarten, and I haven't had to deal with the issue of whether to hold him back.

  • My DD is not.  She is a Mid-June baby and did make the cut-off but was born with a brain injury and is a little delayed.  She ahs been in the schools PreK program last year and her teachers and speech teacher all felt, and DH and I agreed, that an extra year of PreK will do her wonders so she will start kindy next fall.  She actually has a behaviroal assessment next week through our medical system and I really want to know what they have to tell us as I know whatever we learn will be helpful for her PreK teachers this year in helping to ensure she is ready to start next year.  She is developmentally not far behind and in some areas, ahead but she is pretty immuture and she processes things slower.  The extra year will help with some of these issues but getting her a diagnoses and treatment in the next year is going to be huge.

  • Audrey's not going. School cut off in our district is Aug. 1st. Obviously with a nov. birthday, she'll go next year.

  • Ethan won't start until next year.  The cutoff here is August 30, so he can't go.  He will be doing pre-k 5 times/week this year though.

  • Jackson turns 5 on 10/1.  Our cut off is 9/30, and as far as I know, sending early isn't an option (not that we would have taken it).  We've never lived anywhere where he would have made the cut off so we started him in preschool to give him 2 years of preschool based on starting in 2012 anyway.  So no big deal.

  • Our cutoff is 12/31, and my son's birthday is 9/7. We are giving him an extra year. I know we made the right decision.

  • Ds is an Oct. baby, and our cut-off date id Sept. 1. He'll do 4 day pre-k this yr.
  • DS is a November baby and won't start until next year.  I'm really completely fine with it....he is happy and has good friends and a preschool that knows him well.

  • My 2007 son is 3 weeks after the cut off, so he will be almost 6 when starting K.  He will go to PreK3 this year and Prek4 next year (if they offer it).  I am glad he just misses the cut off, he's small for his age and a boy (a lot less mature that DD was, he academics arent as strong as her's were at this age).

DD was just before the cut off and is just now turning 6 and entering the first grade. It hasn't hindered her.  She's in the top reading group and a social butterfly (just her nature).

It's different for each kid.  The kids got to an awesome school; I believe they will both do well in their own time.

  • DS misses the cut off of Sept 1, so we'll be waiting. I, however, think he could totally do it if he didn't miss the cut off! Smile He's going to preschool again this year.
