Play area and 2 story house

We live in a townhouse where the bedrooms are upstairs and the living/dining/kitchen and 1/2 bath are downstairs.  Being that it's a townhouse, we don't have a lot of space downstairs and the toys are kind of taking over the living room.  When we switch DS to a regular bed, I would like to have his toys in his room because there is a LOT more space up there.  Has anyone done this?  Does your LO like playing in their room or do you still have to have a lot of toys downstairs?  I was thinking that we could put all the "messy" toys (Legos, blocks, puzzles, etc.) upstairs and one big self contained thing downstairs, like a play kitchen or something like that.

Re: Play area and 2 story house

  • I also live in a townhouse with the same set up (bedrooms upstairs). We have space under the stairs to store a lot of DD's toys and she has a kitchen behind our couch.  I have some of her toys upstairs in her room but because she is home with DH during the day and they are downstairs most of the day, she has more of her toys downstairs in a big bin.

  • My kids never played in their own room until they were close to 4. They'd drag their toys out to the living room or basically to wherever we were in the house. Right now we have a pretty nice playroom set up for them right next to the living room and my 2yo still drags toys over.

It's worth the attempt, you never know, but for my kids, they wanted to be where the action was.

  • DS will not play in his room (upstairs) alone. I keep a lot of toys in his room and some downstairs as well. There is no escaping the toys but I have a rather organized space so that when we do put them away it's almost like not having proof of a child in the house. I like my adult environment for when DS is in bed and DH and I are relaxing on the couch.

  • When we switched DS to a big bed we had to totally empty his room because he wouldn't nap or sleep because of the toys. When we lived in a condo like yours we just did the bin thing and the rack with buckets. We also made a space in our basement but he was young and didn't really use it.
