external inversion for a breech baby

I am going to have an external inversion for a breech baby tomorrow and I am very nervous! My Dr. said it could put me into labor. So i dont know if i shoudl expect to have a baby tomorrow or just the procedure. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Re: external inversion for a breech baby

  • A girl in my birthing class had an external version and it didn't work for her. It did not put her into labor as she was doing just peachy in class last Wednesday. We'll see if she's in class tonight. I belive she's 37 weeks now.

  • I would be prepared for the baby to be born. The inversion can cause labor because the baby is so big at this point that moving it can cause contractions and even rupture your water. Better to be prepared!

  • My sister had this done. She said they give you a muscle relaxer so that your uterus is relaxed and easier to turn the baby. She also  said that after it is done they will keep you for an hour or two.  Her baby turned back on the way home.

  • Friend of mine just did this. She is still in pain a few days later and the procedure didn't even work

  • i have seen plenty of versions (or attempted versions) and I have not seen a single one go into labor then and there.  Maybe start contracting, maybe the contractions eventually progress toward labor over a day or week, but I have seen them ALL get sent home and not one came back for me the next day.

  • It *could* cause labor to start, but they will monitor you for an hour or two after.

It didn't help turn DD and we had my section 3 wks later, and it didn't hurt that much that day, or after, just not fun while they are doing it.

  • I had an external version that was also unsuccessful, which later during c/s we found out was due to a uterine septum.  I don't think the risk of going into labor is very high. It is just a lot of manipulating and pressure.  I know a lot of ppl say it hurts, but it really wasn't too bad for me.
  • Yikes. The success rate isn't very encouraging. My LO is breech, with time to spare.... hopefully he turns in time! Hopefully your EV works or your LO turns on his/her own!
