  • I personally would wait until you know how everything is going to work out.  You can rent one and then run out and buy one just as easily if you need it.

  • I never really used mine.  Keep in mind I BF and then supplemented with formula, so I had a back up if I needed it.     Maybe a manual or cheap electric one would be nice if you need to express for engourgment reasons or in case you are sick and can not nurse.

  • Then just wait and see if you will. It's not like you have to order them and they take time to arrive. You can go and buy one the day you need/want it.  You shouldn't even open them until after you decide if you will be using it since it then becomes non-returnable if opened, so why not just wait?

I had a manual pump that I never used before DS#1 was born and went out and bought a double electric one when he was 2 weeks old.  I didn't need one until then.

  • i would either rent or buy one maybe not until after the baby is born, but you really think you'll never leave your kid not even for a couple hours here and there?

  • I would wait to buy one. You can always go get one later if you decide to.

I really HATED pumping!!! I EBFd for about 5 months with both my boys. I did the whole pumping thing with DS1 to have a stash in the freezer but I couldn't stand it. I didn't pump at all with DS2 and was way happier :)

  • I'll be getting a small manual just for times when I might not be there for a couple of hours (for example if my husband is on days off and I need to go run errands I'm much more likely to leave the baby with him) or in case of any illnesses, medications that interfere with BFing, or emergencies that would cause me to be away from her.

Well definatly not for quite awhile... I have already arranged to be able to take her to work with me, and there is no one who Id leave her with until shes bigger other than her daddy. And I dont think Ill even be doing that for at least a couple months.... not for more than a little while anyways...But thats why Im asking if I realy need to get one now... :)

  • Your other option is seeing if your insurance will cover it.  A lot will after delivery.  Then you can have it just as back up.

I just got a simple manual pump too, I'm hoping that's all I'll need as a SAHM, my mom never pumped with me or my brother, so fingers crossed!

  • I only used mine when I got clogged ducts. My dd refused to take a bottle.

  • I didn't pump a whole lot... I am a SAHM. But thank GOD I had one and got my baby used to taking EBM out of a bottle.

When he was just 2 months old I had to get a LEEP procedure and be put completely under. I couldn't nurse for 24 hours and had to pump and dump... I was SO grateful that I had a stash and he was used to taking a bottle... it was so stressful, happened very quickly, and the last thing I needed was to be freaking out about how/what my baby would be eating.

You never know what could happen and when you need to be away. I think my BF relationship was so successful because I gave myself a break and he got bottles of BM sometimes. JMO.

  • I'm waiting too since I probably won't need it right away, and later I'm not going back to work so I think I'll just get a manual.  I figure in a month or two I'll have a better idea of how often I'll want to pump.
  • I exclusively breast fed my daughter for 13 months (with slow weaning beginning around 11 months). No bottles, just me.

I never owned a pump. Never really had a pump and dump moment, either. You can get one - just remember one thing: once you crack the packaging, it's all yours. No taking it back.

  • This is a good question, but you'll get all kinds of answers.  Me, personally, I didn't leave my kids with anyone long enough to need to be fed.  My son got maybe 2 bottles of BM.  Then he probably got 2 bottles of formula because the pump didn't work well for me.  (I'm talking 4 bottles Total, the entire year he was EBF).  DD never once took a bottle.  I did pump a little for her in case, but she would never take it anyway.  For me, a pump is kind of a waste of money.  But some people really like them.  So I think it's just a matter of circumstance and opinion.

  • Just wait to see how nursing is going. You can rent one from the hospital or a lactation boutique for as long as you need if you only need one temporarily to boost supply or something. I rented for a month before it was clear that I would need to pump daily to keep my supply up. At that point, I waited for a good sale and bought a Medela Pump In Style Advanced.

  • This is something that you will have to decide on yourself. It may be that you don't need it, or you might find out that you'd like to get one. But I don't think it's necessary for everyone. Although I will be a SAHM I decided to go ahead and get one because I plan on pumping and freezing as well and just in case I decide to go back to work anyways. But it's all on what you want to do. I'd probably wait a little while since you are unsure and then decide.

My sister exclusively BF and needed her pump to help boost her supply. It also came in handy when one nipple started bleeding so she could make sure blood wasn't getting into the breast milk.

  • Get one!  Trust me.  You may think you just want to EBF, but pumping is sometimes very necessary for your own comfort.  And if you ever want to leave the house, you will want to introduce a bottle at some point.

I thought I would EBF, but I went crazy eventually. I was exhausted, crying, miserable, and needed help.  So, I started pumping and my DH was able to help with night feedings.  It made a world of difference!

  • I EBF my DD for two years and five months... well, the exclusive part lasted most of the first year, then solids came. I never bought a pump. The hospital gave me a cheapo hand pump, which I did use once to relieve engorgement before nursing my LO after the milk came in. I never used it to replace a direct feeding.

You don't need a pump unless you plan to be away from your LO for more than, say, three/four hours a day. Since I'll be in grad school this coming year, a pump is suddenly a necessity for me and our family feeding needs, as I won't be using formula at all.
