Xp: Hungry in the night?

so for whatever reason yesterday Lorenzo did not eat dinner for me and when DH got home- he tried to get him to eat some and he just didnt want to- fine, we dont force the issue-but last night he woke at 1, 130, 230, then 3- we took turns going in comforting, he'd settle then wake- so DH says maybe he's hungry- so I gave him a bottle of milk, rocked him to settle, and put him down..he stayed asleep.{ Now obvs he couldn't really tell me what was going on- it could be teeth- he could havebeen hungry- we're just guessing...I was trying to get him to sign what he wanted but by the 3rd wake up..I was tired}So if your LO has a light dinner- what do you do? do you offer a snack before bed? (I really dont want to get into THIS habit- but if we stick with fruit or crackers or something- it wouldn't be too bad)thoughts?

Re: Xp: Hungry in the night?

  • There was a time ds1 was waking up very early, hungry. We started offering a bowl of oatmeal every night before bed. My parents did this for my sister because she wouldn't sleep unless her tummy was full. I don't see any problem with it really. Now and then I still make a bowl if he really didn't eat much.

  • We used to give DD1 a healthy snack before bed, for a little while.

DD2 has woken up the past 3 nights and the only thing that would get her back down was some milk...so I'm thinking she's waking up hungry too. Guess it's time for a before-bed snack for her as well.

I don't think it's a big deal or a bad habit or anything :) If anything, it's expected for kids to snack throughout the day. 3 meals is unrealistic with such a tiny tummy (read that in Parenting this month Wink). It's actually healthier for everyone to eat 6 smallish meals a day...heck, I often snack before bed (apple or cereal or something healthy) so why not them :)

I don't see a problem with this as long as they aren't skipping eating dinner entirely because they're banking on a snack later on.  My kids walk this line.  But we eat dinner at 6 and they go to bed at 7:45 so they really shouldn't be hungry only an hour and a half later.

I agree with this and now that he's approaching 2, I haven't been offering oatmeal and will offer dinner again if he didn't eat. Before 2, I really don't think he got the concept of getting something else later (because it was almost two hours later) and I just wanted us all to sleeeeeeeep.

  • If DS has a really light dinner or just picks at his dinner, I always offer a before bedtime snack. I can't stand the thought of knowing he didn't really eat and sending him to bed! Sometimes he doesn't want the snack, and then I know it's because he just really isn't hungry, not because he didn't like what's for dinner. (We are going through somewhat of a phase in what he will and will not eat.)

  • DS wakes in the night about once per month and when he does, I automatically grab him a bottle of milk.  I figure if he's hungry, it'll help and if nothing else, it'll soothe him.  It always does the trick.  This is the only time he gets a bottle and while I know it's not good for him to have it and not good to go to bed with milk on his teeth, it happens so infrequently, I'm not worried about it.

  • I always offer DD a small healthy snack before bed.  We usually eat dinner around 5:30 and she doesn't go to bed until 9:30.
