I've read several different things. Some seem to indicate it started with the police shooting someone, others seem to indicate it's related to unemployment and government social policies. Yet others seem to say that it's all stemming from people on twitter, etc., inciting people to come join in the fun and wanton destruction.

And Chicago is also enjoying some of the same. Teens using social media to set up "flash mobs" to create chaos and then mug people in the process. Happened in front of Water Tower Place in broad daylight.

Scary.

two words:  Austerity Program.  Massive government cuts in social programs, unemployment, economic dissarray.  The hubs and I were just discussing this earlier. . . it's ugly.

It's out of control. Our best friends are living there for work and they said it's really bad. At first the riots weren't in their neighborhood, but they have spread. It's really scary- we visited them in June and thought it was a very calm city. It seems like the riots have nothing to do with the shooting anymore.

Well no, the shooting was the spark - the mitigating event - just like Rodney King wasn't about the actual moment w/Rodney King, these riots aren't about the shooting itself -- they're about a genuine dissatisfaction with the government and a fomenting resentment stemmed from unemployment and economic dispair.  And I'd be silly if I didn't mention the riots in the middle east - I suspect that there are mitigating circumstances for all of them, but many of them (whether their governments are "good" or "bad") are based in the same thing - large populations of young people who feel powerless in the face of this new economic reality.
