f/u to sleep training conversation with Pedi

Some of you may remember I've had a difficult time with sleep and we decided to sleep train again using extinction. It wasn't working and after 11 days, the Pedi said to give it another week and if things weren't better than she was going to recomend me to a Professional Sleep Dr.

(OP: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/56304859.aspx)

Well, I am happy to report that things are MUCH better. It literally took three weeks, but LO is now napping in her crib and sleeping at night in her crib with only about 10-15 minutes of crying per day total.

Those three weeks were incredibly tough, but seeing the dark circles under LOs eyes disappear helped me know we were doing the right thing.

She still wakes 2-3 times per night, and her naps are pretty short, but I am not going to do any further training for a while. We BF and I feel like my milk has been lower in the daytime due to LO wanting more "real" food, so I want to be sure she's gettting plenty of milk - even if it's at night.

I'll talk to her Pedi again at her 9 month appointment about when to cut back on those feeds, but for now, she is sleeping in her crib, so I consider that a VICTORY. :)

Thanks for letting me vent 800 times about this over the last 8 months.... you girls are the BEST!

  • I'm glad that it all is working out! So did you end up seeing the sleep specialist, or did you stick with extinction?

  • We are kind of new to this sleep training thing.  We started about a week ago, and we are also bf.  Oliver woke up 6 times the first night, and it was really hard, but I gave him 5 minutes to cry each time to see if he would settle himself, knowing that if he was truly hungry, he would continue to cry. The first night we did 2 feedings at 2:30am and then 5:30am; he slept from 8pm-6:30am.  Since then, he has gradually reduced the number of wakings; last night it was 2 wakings once at 2:30 (his bed time is 8pm) and he put himself back to sleep in less than 5 minutes (he usually rolls to his belly at this point) and then again at 5:15 and this time it was to eat and then he went right back to sleep until I had to wake him to leave for work at 6:45. HTH and good work momma!!

No, we didn't because things got better before the third week was up. My LO is just incredibly stubborn! HSHHC says that most children will be trained in 3 days with extinction - it took my LO 21 days! (For an explanation of why we went with extinction, see my clicky in OP).
