Pelvic Pain any have relief

I have been having pelvic pain diagnosed as SPD since 20 or so weeks, but recently the past two-three weeks it's become so unbearable I don't know what to do. I'm to the point now that getting up and walking takes me forever and then I'm in such pain I could cry. I've tried pelvic girdle but couldnt wear it because it felt like it was suffocating me. The MD says this happens sometimes, but that there really isnt anything that can be done. I've gone to the chiropractor and he said pelvis is all out of whack along with hips, did an adjustment and within an hour pain was back. I cant imagine how I'm going to walk or go about my daily activites for potentially the next six weeks. Does anyone have this and how are you coping with the pain?

  • I am 28 weeks and have been relying on tylenol and an ice pack on my crotch! It obviously only provides temporary relief but that's all we can do really.

  • You know I've thought of using heat but not an ice pack, I'm going to try that tonight

  • I'm in physical therapy for this. I have a list of stretches I do. The other things that are saving me are baths and dips in the pool. It's not fun at all.

  • Can you describe what stretches you're doing. I was doing some research and someone had reccomended the cat/cow pose from yoga but that doesnt seem to do anything. I take a bath every night. And I agree it's not fun at all and it's exhausting trying to explain to people why I'm walking like a ninety year old woman lol

Really?!!? I'm scared to death to try any of these. Seems like when my legs are spread is when the pain is at its worst. For instance the thought of doing this lunge in the bottom picture makes my whole body freeze up!

  • I had SPD really bad during my 1st pregnancy using a walker and at the end a wheelchair to get around. I had a physical therapist who helped me with my muscle pains. And I also had a chiropractor who didn't adjust me, but used acupuncture. That gave me the most relief. I was going 2x/wk to the chiro during most of my 2nd tri and about 1x/wk in 3rd tri. The pain was awful, but I didn't take any pain meds, so my pain was rated at a 10 most of the time. The only good thing that came out of it was that L&D was 1/2 as painful as I thought it would be (being induced with pitocin and not taking pain meds or an epi). I vaguely remember how bad the pain was, but really I basically forgot about it. That is why I am having my 2nd about a yr later and luckily she has been kinder to my body...now I wonder how L&D will be this time! Still hoping for as natural of a birth as possible. GL..looks like you don't have too far to go!

  • This just plain sucks and there's no getting around it.

This is the only way I have been able to get out of bed the last couple of mornings:

I lie on my back with my knees bent in the air (getting in this position takes me a minute), and H kneels next to me, facing my knees perpendicularly.  He places his balled up fists between my knees and tries to push my knees apart with his fists while I strain against him, trying to keep my knees together.  I do this for about 30 seconds, then he places his arms around my knees and squeezes while I try to pull my knees apart.

My doula, who is a massage therepist, showed me this.  For some women it works wonders to realign the pelvis.  For me, the effects wear off in minutes, but it allows me to get out of bed a LOT easier.

  • Ehhhh... If you can do those stretches, you don't have SPD haha Holy cow!! Even if someone else manipulated my legs into those positions, it would hurt like a mother! *shudder*  That could help with normal pelvic girdle pain of pregnancy, but it could damage you more if you have SPD.

So far, the only thing that seems to help is an overfilled bath... Pools can be okay, but it's hard to get into them and walking under water is quite painful. Don't walk far, don't stand for long periods, sit in a decline whenever possible to take the pressure off from your pelvis. I now sit down to fold laundry, put dishes into the dishwasher, look into the fridge, etc...

I've heard that massage therapy can help, but you need to find a therapist that has special training in suprapubic massages.

  • Yeah, those stretches are about the opposite of what my doctors/midwives/etc. have told me to do to help relieve my pain.  I had SPD so badly during my last pg/recovery that I used a walker to get around.

The ONLY thing that worked was a very strong determination to keep my knees together at all times.  Getting out of bed, rolling over, putting clothes on, getting in and out of the car, etc.  It's awful and I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.

  • Yeah, I have SPD too, and I saw a chiropracter and a physical therapist, both of which did almost nothing for me. Floating in water really helps me. I have to sleep with several pillows tucked in around me, to hold me level everywhere, especially between my legs to keep them balanced. I have to have my husband help me get out of bed, and I have to avoid seperating my legs.

Good luck. I am just holding out for the end at this point. The pain is bad, but I dont really have any other options.

  • Thanks for all the posts...I spent the past two days basically laying on the couch and eliminated any house work or cooking anything that required me to be on my feet and I've noticed that compared to how bad the pain was before this morning I was feeling a little better(still hurting) but a little better. Foolishly I took that opportunity to do too much and am now back on the couch. But I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this as it can be difficult to explain to people even my MD, how much pain I'm in, especially to someone who has never experienced it.
