Questions on Adoption Process & Homestudy

Hello everybody! I just mailed my adoption application this morning and I am so excited! Could you please tell me what to expect next? What is the process like? What is the homestudy like? Other than presenting a neat, clean, and organized home is there anything else I should do to prepare for the homestudy? Please let me know. Thanks so much :)

  • Congratulations. The home study will be completed by a Social Worker (we hired one not affiliated with a specific adoption agency) and they will meet with you 3-4 times before you are an approved family. They will go into a lot of depth, in your childhood, your reason for adoption, your finances, your spouse (visa versa), etc. You will have to do LOTS of paperwork including doctor physicals, FBI fingerprinting and state fingerprinting, showing up-to-date pet vaccinations, Self Studies (each spouse fills out about themselves...quite extensive), and more.

You will also, at some point, create your profile (aka Life Book or Lifestyle Presentation) which will be presented to birthmothers when you are approved through your home study.

Your agency that you've applied with will most likely give you loads of information about the home study once they're received your application. Good luck!

  • Hi.

Are you working with an agency? Someone from there (or whoever you're working with) should be able to walk you through the process and know what to expect.

In general, you'll fill out a lot of paperwork for background checks and some sort of autobiographical questions about your background, your life, your expectations as far as adoption goes, etc. You'll talk to a SW about all of those topics and will have a home visit. Your SW should be able to let you know if there are certain things they're looking for.

Just keep in mind, they're not out to disqualify you. They want you to succeed as well.

    GL!
