XP - Big Boy Bed ?

Coming over a little early for some advice please!

 

We decided to convert DS's bed out into the full size bed.  He was thrilled and did not want to leave it(before bedtime). We got him settled, the usual bedtime routine, tucked him in and left the room.

He got up once right after, and we put him right back. He went to sleep. He got up at 2am and came into our room. We took him back to his bed. He went back to sleep. At some point, he got up again because we woke up to our little boy sleeping at our feet in our bed.

My question - how do you get them to stay put in their all night even when they wake in the middle of the night? Or is this something that you work on over the next couple of nights and he will eventually "get it"?

    We close the door and DS doesn't know how to open it.

    This but it did take a few nights for him to get the hang of it. Now if he does wake up and we go into his room he tells us to go.. LOL
