3rd Trimester

Ibprofen alternative?

Prior to getting pregnant I had some major dental issues but they were all supposidly taken care of early in the first trimester. Well, last weekend and then again this weekend something has flaired up again. I am in some increadable pain and not sure how I'm going to get through the next 12 hours until the dentist opens up in the morning. I know taking ibprofen is a big no no especially during the third trimester and the list of ok meds on my doctor's website doesn't include any anti-inflmaitory. Any suggestions on what might be safe or what else I can do?

TIA

Re: Ibprofen alternative?

  • Yeah, I've been taking tylenol and it's had zero effect :P

  • Depending where the pain is, if you can put an ice pack on your jaw or cheek where it hurts, the ice may help.

  • What about numbing stuff like anbesol? I'm not sure if it's pregnancy ok or not, but it's something you can look into.
  • DH just went though this. Dentist suggested filling a big cup up with mostly ice and a bit of water. Sip on the water and let it sort of stay in your mouth til it warms up-- you can swallow it then or spit it out (dentist suggested spitting it out so DH didn't get uber bloated with water). That and an ice or heating pack right on the cheek/jaw were the only things that got DH through til he had a root canal.

  • This is a totally random trick, but try packing some ground cloves around the tooth that's hurting.
  • Swishing salty water around your mouth for as long as you can stand it, spitting it out, and repeating a few times could be helpful.

  • Thanks ladies!! I did try a few of the tricks - salt water mouthwash seemed to help some. Went to the dr and the dentist and neither were much help with this particular problem! Dentist did give me a mouthwash and said to use some orejel which helped get me through the night at least. Took x-rays and didn't look like the problem was the tooth but personally I think it is even though I really don't want to have and pay for a root canal I have a feeling I'll eventually be headed there :P
