Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Infant tylenol (or similar)

I went to CVS before and the regular pharmacist wasn't there.  I wanted to get tylenol for DS's shots on Thursday.  But, I noticed that the packaging says 6-23 months.  Is there something for babies younger than that?  My mom said not to get Tylenol after all of the recent recalls from them.  They only had generic and Triaminic.  Most of them say "fever". What should I do?  And, do I give it to him before or after the shots? TIA!

Re: Infant tylenol (or similar)

  • I couldn't find any either and at my lo's 2 mo checkup my pedi said it was recalled.  He did say I could give him half a teaspoon of the children's tylenol (determined by his weight- he was 10lbs 12 oz), but I didn't need to give him any.  He also mentioned that's it's better to give it to them after the shots if necessary, that giving it to them before can affect the vaccines somehow

  • I think you can use children's tylenol for infants but check with your pedi. And not sure what recent recalls your mother is referring to, I've not heard of any for years and years. You can also get children's motrin though.

  • We got some at Target.  It's Target brand (Up & Up) and I think it's called Infant Acetaminophen.  You'll need the exact dosage either from the pedi or the pharmacist because it's based on weight when they're that little.  We gave dd a dose after the shots because she was fussy and screaming, but I think you can give it before the shots too.... it's up to you.

  • We still have infant tylenol in Canada. . . It even comes in dye free or normal.  For babies under 3 months it says always consult a physician: ours said to give him .5ml.
  • Infant tylenol has been recalled for over a year which is why you can't find it (tylenol also recalled all tylenol cold sinus etc). What you are looking for is acetaminophen which is the active ingredient in tylenol.  You do not want to give infant motrin or advil because there is a different active ingredient.   Little Remedies sells little fevers acetaminophen. You can ask your pedi for the dosage for your infant.

  • I'm confused. I was able to find Infant Tylenol.  Children's Tylenol has a different concentration so you need to make sure you do the math properly, I would have your pedi check it.

You cannot give a baby under 6 months Motrin.

Our pediatrician told us not to give acetaminophen prior to the shots.  I've read that it can make vaccinations less effective.

There have been a lot of recalls with infant Tylenol recently, but we bought CVS-brand infant acetaminophen.  I forgot to ask the pediatrician for the proper dosage at her appointment, but I found a chart online that shows the correct dosages for babies based on weight.  Just make sure you know what concentration of acetaminophen you're using!

  • My doc asked us to bring it in and then they showed us how much to give her. They said it was important to give it AFTER the shots.

  • Acetaminophen (active ingredient in Tylenol) can be given to your newborn. Check with your pedi regarding the weight based dose. It can be given every 6 hrs. Some docs will say every 4-6 hrs.

Motrin (ibuprofen) should NOT be given to babies under 6 months old due to the immaturity of their kidneys.

    Lurking from 3-6....

Pedi advised to not give any meds before getting shots because they need to know if LO might have a fever BEFORE they give them the shots.  If they are given acetomenaphin (sp?) before the appointment they don't know what your LO's "normal" is.  Although it is hard to watch LO get the shots and be in a bit of pain, you can always give them the tylenol right after to give them some relief.  Your pedi should give you the dosage based on your LO's weight.  I have been using Triaminic for DD, at her 2 month shots she got .4mL from the dropper, and at 4 months she got .8 mL from the dropper.
