I went to CVS before and the regular pharmacist wasn't there. I wanted to get tylenol for DS's shots on Thursday. But, I noticed that the packaging says 6-23 months. Is there something for babies younger than that? My mom said not to get Tylenol after all of the recent recalls from them. They only had generic and Triaminic. Most of them say "fever". What should I do? And, do I give it to him before or after the shots? TIA!
Re: Infant tylenol (or similar)
I'm confused. I was able to find Infant Tylenol. Children's Tylenol has a different concentration so you need to make sure you do the math properly, I would have your pedi check it.
You cannot give a baby under 6 months Motrin.
Our pediatrician told us not to give acetaminophen prior to the shots. I've read that it can make vaccinations less effective.
There have been a lot of recalls with infant Tylenol recently, but we bought CVS-brand infant acetaminophen. I forgot to ask the pediatrician for the proper dosage at her appointment, but I found a chart online that shows the correct dosages for babies based on weight. Just make sure you know what concentration of acetaminophen you're using!
BFP #1 9/7/10, EDD 5/14/11, Violet born 5/27/11.
BFP #2 4/9/12, EDD 12/16/12, M/C Rory 4/24/12.
BFP #3 10/6/12, EDD 6/16/12., Matilda born 6/17/13.
Acetaminophen (active ingredient in Tylenol) can be given to your newborn. Check with your pedi regarding the weight based dose. It can be given every 6 hrs. Some docs will say every 4-6 hrs.
Motrin (ibuprofen) should NOT be given to babies under 6 months old due to the immaturity of their kidneys.
Lurking from 3-6....
Pedi advised to not give any meds before getting shots because they need to know if LO might have a fever BEFORE they give them the shots. If they are given acetomenaphin (sp?) before the appointment they don't know what your LO's "normal" is. Although it is hard to watch LO get the shots and be in a bit of pain, you can always give them the tylenol right after to give them some relief. Your pedi should give you the dosage based on your LO's weight. I have been using Triaminic for DD, at her 2 month shots she got .4mL from the dropper, and at 4 months she got .8 mL from the dropper.
