This will be my first baby and I dont really know the pros and cons for manual and electric pumps. I would really appreciate it if you could share your thoughts and help out a first time mom.
I'm a first time mom as well but in my opinion if you can afford an electric pump or rent one or even get one through WIC its way better. The hand pump is a lot of work. The double pumps are the best since it takes less time. But a hand pump is nice if you have flat nipples because it helps pull the nipple out and you don't have to set anything up.

I will say I am going to be getting an electric pump...but ALSO a cheap single hand pump...I find that at the VERY VERY begining of breastfeeding your nipples will hurt or more like it KILL...especially in the cold winter month. If it wasnt for the hand pump i had I probably would have given up after the 2nd day but it was a life saver. It allowed me to get the engorgment taken care of and helped my DD to nurse better in the end.

I have an electric one (Medela freestyle) and I love it! It is a double pump that is hands free. I like it because it is faster and easier since I only have about 15 minutes to pump as a teacher on breaks before, during and after school.

I got a manual pump for the first 2-3 days that my milk came in w/ DD .... and let me tell you .... my hand was SORE pumping after just that little time! I went and got an electric pump, but only used for about 4 weeks.
This time, I'm probably going to rent from a hospital.
The things you need to think about are how often and when you will be using the pump. If you want it just for "emergencies" to relieve engorgement etc., then a manual would be fine. However, if you actually plan to pump bottles for LO then get an electric. Look into Ameda- they have excellent pumps and are often recommended by lactation consultants for a variety of reasons over the Medela (including lower prices).
Ladies, thank you so much for your replies! Neither my mom or MIL breast fed their babies... so it helps to hear from moms who have breast fed. I definitely will be looking in to getting an electric pump and maybe a maunal one for the very beginning!
