Newborn diaper wipes

Hey ladies, first time mom question. What do you use for baby wipes for a newborn? I've read to just use a washcloth with water the first week or so, which is fine for #1, but what do you do about #2? I don't have that many washcloths and don't want to stain the ones I have with poop. Do you just buy "throw-away" washcloths for that purpose, or can you use a regular baby wipe for a #2?

Re: Newborn diaper wipes

  • I buy extra large cotton squares or rounds (flat ones). I spray the baby's bottom and the cotton with a water bottle and then wipe. I use them for pee and poo. Easy and disposable. Good luck!

I think it has to do with their skin being subject to getting VERY irritated the first week or so. Wipes are too harsh for the initial days.

This is the first time I've ever heard this...I don't know anyone that hasn't used regular wipes except a couple of mamas I know that CD.

yep. and the hospitals use wipes too.

  • Wipes are fine. Just make sure you get the ones marked sensitive.

  • Our hospital uses the gauze like squares like a PP mentioned not wipes.  I also heard they will send you home with some if you ask and that should get you through the first week or so

  • I am deliering at Texas Women's in Houston, and at our class last week, was told to bring wipes to the hospital.  The reason being, they use washcloths and many women don't like to use this.   Just FYI. :)

  • We used pampers wipes. No big deal.

  • This is good to know... I had gotten the impression from reading and classes that using a cotton pad or cloth with water was the norm and to use them as long as the first month.  The wipes I bought are unscented and alcohol free anyway, but I bought a bunch of cotton squares too.  So, I guess I'll just wait and see how I feel since it seems like everyone else did fine with wipes.

  • I really liked Lanisoh wipes when DS1 was a newborn.  Good for sensitive skin.  As soon as he got a bit older I switched to a cheaper brand.
  • Regular sensitive skin wipes. I cannot imagine trying to clean up a meconium poop with flipping cotton balls.

  • I just used the sensitive/natural ones for DD#1.  We'll do the same this time around.

This was our experience with DS1 as well.  I think we started using regular wipes by the 2nd week.

this.  our hospital sent us home with more than enough for the first week.  even the sensitive baby wipes can irritate LO's new skin.

  • Oh and I can't see myself cleaning baby with cotton balls at night when you are up about every 3 hours. Call me lazy but I was and will be exhausted. DS never had any issues with Pampers Sensitive Skin wipes. Good luck to those wanting to go wet washcloths at 3am.

  • My mom bought a ton of the "baby" washcloths for us to use as wipes. They are smaller and less expensive than "adult" washcloths. She always used them the same way for both pee and poops! She would wet them in the sink and if she was feeling nice, throw it in the microwave for a few seconds (nothing hot just a little warm!). Gross poops used two washcloths but for the price of baby ones, it's never crazy to have too many.

My mom definitely didn't cloth diaper and she used washcloths instead of wipes for all 4 kids. Once other people in my family started having babies at an age when I was old enough to understand, i was surprised that people bought wipes to use!

  • I just use the sensitive baby wipes: fragrance free, etc.
  • I used Pampers Sensitive Skin wipes. This is what they used in the NICU and regular nursery where I delivered DD#1. I'll be doing the same this time around as well. Hopefully without the NICU visit.

Ditto, it was hard enough to clean it up with wipes, especially with legs flailing and all those d**n tags on baby's ankles getting in it.  Yuck.

Our hospital used sensitive skin wipes from pampers and we are doing the same at home.

  • You're really overthinking this. Just use the sensitive fragrance-free wipes!

  • Regular wipes...we didn't have an issue.
  • Viva paper towels with warm water is what we will be using as suggested by our pediatrician and the baby nurse that taught our caring for newborns class.

    Good luck
