Blackout curtains

Hi ladies, We are just starting our nursery and I'm hoping you all have some recommendations for good quality but not terribly expensive blackout curtains in kid friendly colors.  I want curtains that will block out the light during nap time and give me a dark room for the baby to sleep in.

 Thanks!

Re: Blackout curtains

  • Just buy white blackout liners and put regular curtains in front of them. You can either pin them together or put up two curtain rods.

  • i got roman shades from select blinds. i'm super happy with them. i got them for my room first, then when i got pregnant, i got some for the nursery. i've always been happy with select blinds. purchased faux wood mini blinds for many other windows and a bamboo shade for my kitchen too.

  • We bought room darkening blinds when they were on sale at Lowes and then just put a dark brown curtain over top. It could feel like night time in the nursery at any point in time during the day.

Side note: We got the cordless blinds for safety. LO's crib is positioned close enough to the windows that it made me nervous to have cords everywhere. Also, it only takes a push of a button to raise the blinds.

  • My DDs have these in their room (pink, 63") and they make the room significantly darker. I wouldn't say that the room is pitch black during the day but it makes a big difference compared to regular curtains.

  • They have them for around $15 a panel at WalMart (kid colors too). We had separate blackout liners and they were a PITA, but will work if you can't find colors you like.

This...the curtains that were already lined were never thick enough to totally block out the light.

  • Just from experience with my DS, blackout is not always best. The LO will expect wherever they are sleeping to be dark and then when you are out/traveling/at sitter's they will NEED a dark room. So maybe look for light filtering but not necessarily be set on blackout.

  • We got cut to fit vinyl roller shades from Home Depot for all of our bedrooms.  The largest ones are still under $10.  The best part is you can use any curtain, even a sheer or valance, then just roll the shade down for naps.

A decent, cheap curtain we have used is the Eclipse brand from Target.  They do not fully black out the room but they are only $15-30.  From the reviews, the darker colors block the light better, but ours are light colored and only let a soft glow of light through.

  • I have been buying just whatever brand walmart has, they run around $25 a panel. I really like the crinkle design ones. They are so worth it to put them in your house. We have a big window in our living room and when we open up the curtains to let light in the a/c can't keep up and the room gets 4-5 degrees hotter.

This is what I did too.  We got our blinds from Bed, Bath and Beyond.

  • We got them for DH's office and our bedroom when he was working midnights from Walamrt. They where inexpensive and worked great.
  • I got ours at Target.
